hey mate, I too am in the process of doing this conversion so far i have found 3 different measurements from the internet regarding r31 width from 1405mm, 1430,1450. i will be reassembling my diff this weekend to measure myself. will let you know what measurement i get. i also have a standard ute diff to measure

It depends on which part of the R31 diff you measure: drum-to-drum, axle tube width, or flange-to-flange
And depends on which R31 diff you measure: R31-borgwarner or R31-japan

there is a blow by blow description on here somewhere about shortening one axle and using the other on the other side.
Somebody cleverer than me might be able to find the post. Probably overkill unless you have got serious horsepower though.

Definitely overkill it weighs lot ... until you get a CA18DET built up, then you need it, and it's stronger than a Hilux unit, it was the factory axle behind 5-liter V8s in USA

The Borg Warner where used here as well in Aussie v8s. The strong ones had 28 spline axles. They also had cone type LSDs witch wearnt that good. If you get 28 spline axles & eaton tru track LSD then you've got a strong Borgy

My diff is a Borgwarner 28 spline LSD and measures 1465mm from rotor to rotor
My stock 1200 ute diff measures 1305mm from drum to drum I will be running a stroked ca18det in my ute, hence the upgrade You can view topic.
