ok so i have a FS5w60A 5 speed hanging off the back of my warm A15 with twin webers, my syncros are on their way out and the gearbox has never felt real strong. im not sure if i should just rebuild this gearbox or swap it for a t50 toyota box. this is my daily driver so i cant just rebuild it for it to fall apart again in 6months.

Ive got previous experience with a t50 and they are a great gearbox but im not sure if i should just stick with what ive got?

any help would be appreciated.

It wont fall apart every 6 mos. The gearbox you have is more than 30 years old and was factory fitment for high-torque A15s ... New rebuild kit is about $250 or you can just buy the synchros for $100 or so. Most likely only a couple of synchros need replacing

That being said the T50 is a bit stronger, so if you are doing drag starts, maybe it's time to upgrade

thanks mate, i was just worried as the datsun boxes are starting to get rare and i didnt want to keep breaking it when i could just swap a $250 box in for less headaches but if the rebuild will last another 2 years on normal driving (no i dont bash gears every set of lights haha) id be happy with that

I don't know about the difficulty in the swap to the T50, but here is something to consider. The little British car community, especially the MG Midget/Austin Healey Sprite enthusiasts, prize the 60a because it fits so easily in the rather tight confines of the Spridget chassis without mods. Commercially available easy swap kits are designed around this trans. So, there is a strong market for the trans. You might be able to do the swap, then sell the trans into the Spridget market and come out ahead in dollars. A good core trans sells in the states sell for around USD 6-800.

T50 fitting kit was about $800 including used T50 transmission. Or $1750 with rebuilt T50. The kit is not an adapter plate but actually incorporates the front part of the gearbox. It looks like a bell housing but is a new front case

Add to that the cost of modifying the propeller shaft

So it's a fairly cost-effective kit, especially in the long run

ok cool, i spoke to Dellows over the weekend and they are emailing me out a quote for both a t50 and a w50 (out of an RA40 celica) do you know if that kit with the rebuilt t50 comes with a clutch set up?
