#1 Stock air cleaner on 32/36 weber done right
SunnyDaze Posted on: 2017/11/25 8:17
I like the stock air cleaner, so when I installed a 32/36 weber I wanted to modify it to suit. It's been done a few times before, but I took my own approach. It was not particularly easy or cheap but I'm very pleased with the outcome.

Basically I bought a Redline universal air cleaner adapter to 5 1/8" and welded 17mm of 5" gal steel pipe to the bottom of the air cleaner.

The pipe, about 128mm ID, nominally 5 inch, is a perfect fit.

A friend who has a machine shop helped me cut the air cleaner. Not necessary, but helped a lot and produced a clean outcome.

Tacked on the pipe with an arc welder. Not bad for a rough job, lots of holes but solid as. Afterward I cleaned up the weld and filled it with Devcon titanium putty. Good stuff.

Touched up with VHT Pontiac blue engine enamel, which should really be called Datsun air cleaner blue enamel in this market.

The bonnet has plenty of clearance, but it is a 120y. I was able to reuse the main support stay so it is not that much higher than stock. I could not reuse the small stay - tiny bit too tall, but it interfered with the fuel line. With such a wide base it seems very solid anyway. It all just fits with 17mm of 5" pipe. Might have been able to get it a couple of mm lower but it needed to clear the fuel inlet on the carb, and be sufficiently tall to cover the cut-out on the breather pipe port.

Stealthy as mate. I might use this idea if you don't mind.
Looks good!
