Disc brakes for ute

Guys,
Does anybody know if it is possible to put disc brakes in the rear of the 1200 ute??The reason I ask is that I would like to make this upgrade due to a few close calls of late. And yes I have already put a Stanza disc brake front end in, but hopeing for a little more. If anyone knows anything it would be great to hear from you about this. If this makes sense at all. With this would you have to modify the origional diff to accept disc brakes or have a diff with disc brakes fitted cut down to suit the 1200?????

Pintara rear disks:
Apparently Pintara rear disks can be modified to fit a 1200 diff. they must be off any rear wheel drive early Pintara, or the Skyline (HR31 ?). They have a backing plate that can be reused on the 1200 diff, which has the exact offset to suit the 1200. The standard diff mounting holes must be welded and redrilled to suit the 1200, and also to suit the desired position of the caliper. The centre of the plate must also have the centre hole reduced in diameter, as this acts as a bearing retainer. This can be achieved by making a donut shaped insert on a lathe, and welding it in place. (this is off the 1200 mod site)

bluebird series 2 and three or TRX disc over drum rear brakes are the way to go
basically grab yourself the axles with backing plate and the caliper and hub/disc buy some new wheel bearings, swap the bluey setup onto your 1200 axles (requires 3tonne press so prob need to see engineer or some mechanic unless you know someone) then the handbrake will connect straight to the drums and a little bend (by hand) of your brake lines to suit the caliper position, screw that in and bleed brakes this is a straight bolt up, no mods required at all, luckily my bro in law has a washing machine repair man next door and he has a press, we did my brothers car in a matter of maybe 2 or 3 hours, its that simple!!! only prob is wreckers will charge a bit for all the peices so you need to find an "all you can carry" or maybe try to find a private wreck theres a place in melb, cant remeber who asked now so i dont know how close that is to you ![]()

Im in Sydney (Richmond) actually, yes I can get bluey bits.
The things you talked about were easy enough to understand but to me it just sounds a bit to rough of a job to be done like that with both drums and discs. The bits thats were confusing were in B120dat's post.

B120dats is hard and prob more expensive if you can get a good price on bluey bits
THIS IS THE STOCK BLUEY SETUP, the discs operate when braking with the pedal (fluid) and the drums only operate when using the handbrake (cable), its actually a good idea in theory but i guess it was too expensive for mass production and maybe weighed too much if your getting picky about weight im not sure whether you understood this or not but you are simply swapping the bluey setup for the 1200 setup its not a combination of the two or anything ive dreamed up in my head!

Yeah sorry my bad
I will go and have a look at a few blueys on the weekend to see just what your on about and them i'm sure it will make sense once I have a look. It's always better when you can see what you want to do. I was tring to think of how it could work going off my 180B rally car as it has discs in the rear and as you probably know I have to have both the Hydraulic and manual cable handbrake connected.

fair enough
when ive looked at wreckers its actually suprising how many blueys must be series one, some wreckers will not have any with disc over drums on them, if you look through the wheels on the cars you should be able to see what looks like a normal disc with caliper in there, then pull off the wheel and you will notice a small drum aswell, then you will see what im ranting about

Actually, it is becoming a popular thing with newer cars. My Scooby-Doo Legacy has discs with a drum parking brake. I know some Acuras, most likely all of them, have that too. I'll bet it's more common than we think. You can view topic.
