Project details

Restoring to a state to make it a daily driver. Aiming for 7L/100km on the open road.

Fix interior
Determine if head gasket has blown.

Engine would overheat at @ 90kmph.
Installed a thermostat and flushed cooling system.

mine overheated at 110kph, it was the radiator being partially plugged. it was OK at 100kph

New Thermostat installed and some wiring replaced.
Doors locks were a pain, but after some tweaking the lock now.

Next up is re-aligning the steering wheel and fitting new door locks.

what happened to the lock, did the door get smashed?

Someone tried to steal the car in March of this year.
They force a screw driver into the lock and force the whole lock to turn in the door itself to open the door.
Sad story but that's how it goes here.

Locks replaced. Installing central locking at them moment.
Will have to redo the whole wiring harness once I have my work bench sorted.

Finally managed to get the yellow bugger to idle properly @ around 850-900rpm.

The goal is to get this bakkie in roadworthy condition for daily commute to work and back. 100km round trip per day.
So comfy seats are a must and some creature comforts would be most welcome.

Ordered a window rubber kit to replace the perished rubbers.

Currently researching the Toyota 4AGE 20v route. This would be the ultimate goal.
Hobby fund dependent.

I did a 4AGE 20v conversion in a Suzuki sj410 a years ago. Was loads of fun.

Damn you are good! That is correct. Its Carryboy canopy.
The vehicle used to be a roadside assistance vehicle up here in Gauteng.

Current task is to replace all the rubber trimmings on the doors.
When it rains the cabin turns into a pool.

A few weeks ago I heard a ticking noise coming from the distributor. I took the cap off and cleaned it out and the cleaned some dust in the distributor.
I put everything together and took the cabby for a drive. No problems other than sluggish.

I hooked up the timing light to check the markings and it was idling @ 20 degrees. So I adjusted the timing to 10 degrees. took it for a drive and I had less power. I tried advancing the timing to see if I could correct it. No joy.

Long story short.
In the past few weeks I have serviced the carb(china mall carb). This was mainly due to the fact that the idle screw had no effect on the engine's behaviour.
Replaced the (electronic) distributor leads after they fell part after I removed them from the distributor cap.
Tested the ignition coil.
Redid the timing a dozen times. Using the timing marks all over the crank pulley.
Tried setting the timing with the tappet cover off to make sure I am in compression stroke.

What am I missing with this process?

I have gone through the wiki and used the best practices on the wiki.
I have Youtubed this thing to the point I dont want to see another engine bay.

This simple engine will not start regardless of what I do.

After going over some photos from previous work done on the little yellow cabby. I realised we had wired up the distributor leaded back to front. 3 and 2 were backwards.
