Roll cage for 3J < 2 litre
converted
Posted on: 2003/3/1 1:26
I am writing to ask some advise as to whether I should make my own cage for 3J or to take it somewhere in Sydney such as bond roll bars to have it fitted up. I am on a budget so any suggestions as to fitting a light, strong roll cage which complies with this class is appreciated.

To be legal 3J it will have to be a steel cage Im not 100% sure who does them in sydney would probably be best to get one profesionally done welded in ect I dont know how much this would cost expect anywher from$800-$1500 maybe more depending on how safe a cage you want. I have a bond alloy 6 point cage with diagonal brace in the main hoop in mine but was log booked before they changed the rules as cams do all the time.

my br just got a bond bolt in 6-point cage for his mk.1 escort, seems pretty good, its steel but has no diagonal, he was told he didnt need the diagonal but we will see when he tries to log book it, they arnt a really tight fit but not bad i guess for $1100 with side intrusion

ok,i suppose the best people to talk to are some scrutineers for the series,or someone like john taylor at pedders penrith, whose prepared cars for improved production,or get a referal from the cams office.ask what materials you need tomake the cage from, what mounting points, what sort of welding, what grade bolts, pick thier brains to death.don't use water pipe, cause the first thing they do to a new cage is check to see what it's made of.use a cross brace,it stops the main hoop collapsing.also, spring the money for a new cams manual,it's got a whole section on cages, showing you what they want.i know i've heard that rollcages have to be made by cams certified people, but if you can match the cams standards, you might be able to do it yourself. p.s. i now fro said he was with the nsw road racing club, maybe he can help.

it has to be made from cold drawn or seamless tube and specific diamters and thicknesses for different parts of the structure.
Best option is to use a CAMS approved design (in your Motorsport Manual), otherwise the cage needs to be 'homologated' with engineer testing to comply with their standards. if you are asking these kinds of questions, then I think you should take it to an experienced builder. But I think the first thing you should do is join your State's Improved Production Car Club and talk to the other guys. Then get hold of a CAMS motorsport manual and study the rules before you lift a spanner.

Hey guys does Cams have a website? Motorsport NZ has all it rules and regulations online including rollcage specs to international standard. We also have locally homologated cages which use a thinner wall tube than is acceptable in International competitions.Have a look in www.motorsport.org.nz To read the rules you will need Acrobat Reader..which is downloadable from the site.

yep, but they don't have all the tech regs on the site, just tech bulletins which are ammendments to the CAMS Manual of Motorsport which you have to buy for forty something dollars every year.

OK thanks guys thats great info...having a C3 and R5 licence I have the Cams manual on CD, and I know John Taylor too....I'll ask him where he gets it done. Does anyone have a contact who is a Cams log book inspector???, as this person will have the final say.
