i will be doing an engine conversion soon and just out of interest was wondering if anyone new how much power a standard but locked diff from a sedan (h150 i think ?) could hold. I will probly be doing a diff upgrade anyway.

the standard diff isn't the problem,it's the axles that snap, usually at the splined end, particularly if the centre's welded.not a nice thing to have happen at speed.what engine are you putting into the car, cause this is what decides which diff to upgrade to.

Me and my brother managed to rip a few teeth of the wagon diff when we were young...But that car was treated with NO respect, and was powered by a regular A12.
I'd upgrade to the Ute diff at least. Start looking, and get it ready for when you break the sedan diff. ![]() Chris

I broke the teeth off two diffs with an A15.
My A14 gave the stock H145 no problems. Keep in mind that Nissan fitted the H150 to the A14 and A15 cars.

I have no problems with the stock diff in my ute with an A15.
But if your planning a 13B like you mentioned in the other thread, I don't think a stock one will handle it

my H145 let go with an engine that had about 120hp at the wheels (I suspect it was a little tired tho).
I now have an H165 (from a ute) that are bigger all round & have heard they'll take up to 300hp.

All Datsun 1200s have the H145, except the newer utes with H165.
The H150 is from the B210/120Y.

I have a standard diff in my coupe and it puts out 140 rwkw havent busted the diff yet........but its only been on the road for a week now and I am nursing it very much cos I am waiting for it to go bang......what sort of trouble do the h165 ute diffs usually have, is it axles or the center that usually breaks??

The amount of horsepower is irrelevant to this question. The peak torque (twisting force) is what is important. This also means the transmission is relevant. A transmission with a lower first-gear will send more torque to the diff, for example the stock four-speed has a lower first gear than the five-speed overdrive. Also things like revving the engine and dumping the clutch can shock the diff, that's how an A12 can break the diff.
The H150s generally have no trouble with any naturally-asprirated A14 or A15, unless perhaps you are drag racing (dumping the clutch with sticky tires). This means the H165 will hold up too.
