1600cc A15
89mm
Posted on: 2003/11/11 23:39
The time has come for a the A15 in the clubman to become a 1600cc engine---that means boring it to 78.5mm (gives 1588cc).
The question is "which piston do I start with??" All contributions will be examined thoughtfully.

78 and 79mm A15 pistons are readily available through Matsuoka... I think they get 'em from Wiseco. They range from 45K-68K Yen, which is $580-$875 AU. They're all flat top, high compression units.

I've also heard of RB20 pistons in an A15 several times... may be a way cheap alternative.

Thanks for the information.
What I am looking for is a standard piston from one of the majors, Toyota, Mitsubishi, etc that can be used with minimum mods. If I can buy the equivalent from Hepolite, I reckon I'll get a reasonable piston at a fairly good price. I have to admit that we run our car to a pretty tight budget, so cost is of some concern. Subrau Justy pistons.
Not sure of which rods to use to give the right pin height. Might have been A10 but not 100%

I know Toyota pistons will work (2tc?) but I'll have to check with a friend to make sure. Hope you're not buying 'em today ...

I use UC Mazda pistons in mine which are 77mm bore std so if you can find any in 60 thou over they might work.
Need to make pin hole in rod 20mm and machine tops off pistons for correct pin height

Do you plan on sliping an "A" class sleve in it, or is the parent bore thick enough in these engines? I know a good 1200 block will handle a 4mm overbore for street duty, but i don't know about the newer / bigger blocks.

I had an A15 bored out 120thou which then makes it roughly 79mm bore???? I used Mazda 626 pistons. Flat tops with valve recessions, I just had to get a fraction shaved off the top, they worked a treat

Sadly, a 79mm bore with a 82mm stroke would yield 1608cc & i suspect that this would put the car over the limit. Did i get that right 89mm?
