Will 5speed fit into 4speed trans tunnel of sedan?

Hi guys.
A friend of mine wants to replace his 1200 deluxe sedan's 4 speed box with a A14 utility 5speed box. This is because they are plenty available here in South Africa. His 4speed is wining and he said he wants a 5speed. Will it fit in the trans tunnel and also what about the gearbox mounting? Thanks

I would think yes.
I don't think they would have gone to the trouble of remaking the tunnel or gearbox mount points. Just make sure you get the gearbox and the gearbox mount. You may also need to do something with the tail shaft. But it's a totally worthwhile modification. I think the normal length Bakkies (B120) have the same length tail shaft as the Sedans. He might need the tailshaft anyway, I cannot be sure on the output spline. If I was in South Africa, this is the first thing I would do to my sedan. Chris.

If its a dogleg 5spd the reverse ligt switch will need butchering off.

I ran the small 5 speed dogleg trans from a 120Y GX in my 1000, & had no problem with the reversing light switch. I could hardly imagine a problem with the 1200 tunnel.
A14force, were you using the small trans, or the larger trans from an A14 Sunny?

I have an A15 sunny motor and 5 speed box, fitted into 1200 ute, and the reverse switch hits on the mount, will have to be modified. (may help?)

Yes, the switch has problems with the B110 tunnel (60a 5-speed). But the transmission itself bolts right in if you use a modified gearbox crossmember.
I would guess that the Bakkie tunnel is the same as all the other "1200s", so general knowledge of this swap should be common in South Africa.

Wally.
The utility is still being made here. And they are also being bought ALOT here. Every 5th to 6th car you see here is a Nissan utility. This I have noticed. Cheap to buy for businesses and hard workhorses. Gearboxes and bodypanels for utilities are plentiful here in South Africa. If they can only bring back the sedans and coupes!!!! Please feel free to phone Nissan South Africa. They will be glad to assist you.

I have spoken with your nissan dealer and it is not a viable thing to buy new units from them we need second hand boxes from wrecking yards.

Wally.
Forget about wrecking yards. I have also tried to find gearboxes from wrecking yards. None can be found. I will check tonight when coming home from work in a car magazine for some telephone numbers of places here that recondition gearboxes. Will mail it to you. They will probably have some nissan boxes. Your concern will be the cost to get it there. And also if it is in good working condition. My experience here is some people think they know how to fix or repair a gearbox only for you to install and get some gears running against each other when driving. This is personal experience. Ok I must admit this was some cheap backyard mechanic that I used to save money. What a lesson I learned through that. You can view topic.
