Yes. Do you mean a 13B rotary engine, or a 1.3 piston engine? Either way it can be fitted. Both swaps have been done.

Unknown. The gearbox is too small for a 13B engine. It would probably survive behind a 1.3 piston engine, but wouldn't you have to machine an adapter plate or possibly the transmission shaft to make this work?

Rather than "piston" swap, I was talking about "piston engine" swap. There are Datsun 1200s with non-rotary Mazda engines in our Photo Album.

I doubt if anyone has bolted a Mazda engine to the 1200 gearbox. But you never know ... it is likely possible. In the old days we used to put Oldsmobile engines in front of Ford transmissions, etc. and racers are still bolting large Chrysler Hemis to small Chevrolet transmissions.

You would use the engine and gearbox.

Using a front wheel drive engine, means you
need to find a RWD gearbox to suit.

I don't think that using a 1.3L MAzda engine is a great idea. Surely you can find something better over there. Look for something bigger than 1400cc to make it worth the effort of making new engine mounts etc.

In my humble opinion, I think youll get more enjoyment and reliability out of your A-series engine than trying to muck around and fit a dedicated fwd engine in your 1200.

I agree. Look for a RWD 4 cylinder car. And think about using the engine AND gearbox.

The technical considerations in making one gearbox fit on a completely different engine from a different manufacturer is almost impossible.

Different manufacturers probably use different pitch splines, different length input shafts etc. It's not a simple proposition. And certainly not something to be started while building on a budget.

Again, find a RWD car with a 4 cylinder, get the engine and gearbox out of that. Otherwise stick with your A-Series engines. Keep your eyes open for an A15.

barpk, any engine could be fitted to the gearbox, but it would requre at least that you fabricate an adapter plate, and in most cases you would also have to machine some parts of the transmission.

The only engines that fit the Datsun 1200 gearbox are the a-series engines (A10, A12, A13, A14, A15 and A12A).
