#1 Fuel Suge
old_school Posted on: 2004/5/11 5:42
Im in the process of re-installing my fuel take in my 1200 CA18DET. I hav fitteed bigger lines and used the original for the purge tank.

I need a fuel pump but my question is will it require a surge tank. All the mechanics I have spoken to have said NO. Simply pump from the tank up to the injector rails and all should be fine.

They reckon the Datsun tank because of it's size and shape will be fine.

What does everyone else reckon

Definetly use a surge tank I've had experiance with and with out in my SR20 dato and fuel surge sucks very much, imagine driving 50-60k's round a corner then your engine starts coughing and spluttering cause is cant get any fuel. You will need two fuel pumps for this one between fuel tank and surge tank and one between surge tank and engine.

Hope this helps!!

Yes to all of the above..except a big NO to what your "expert mechanics" have suggested.

A 1200 fuel tank was designed for a "mouthful /minute" fuel delivery. There is minimal baffles and because there's no return line on 1200s. there is no swirl pot in the tank.

EFI systems are completely different, The fuel rail needs a lot of petrol thrown at it, most of it goes back to the tank via the return line, this should go to the swirl pot in the tank, or to the surge tank.

1 low pressure pump and 1 high pressure pump is required.

Please don't try anything else.

The mechanics that say stuff like that usually work at a serves station and their tanks are always full (thus eliminating any surging problem)

I'm going to put one in. All my experience tells me I should do it and simply by looking at a coupe fuel tank I felt that it was obvious fuel surge would be a problem.

Thanks Guys.
