idling at the traffic lights today my car died...just died.
the car had been running for over an hour and as soon as i turned my headlights on yhe car just stopped. dead.luckyly a cop was sitting behind me and stopped 4 lanes of traffic so i could get my car off the road.the funny thing is i press my horn and my dash lit up and the car started again.
has this happened to anybody else? and if so what was the problem?
if you can help me out that would be great.

kinda reminds me of one of my dads stories, although since yours started again, i doubt it would be the same problem...

my grandfather had a datsun that he bought brand new. went for years, never had to touch it. Then one day they were driving along, same as usual, and it just died. they pushed it to the mechanic. he had a look, and pulled out the most worn set of points you ever saw... he couldn't believe that the car was still running, and kept the points as an ornament!!!
one new set of points, and it started up like a new one...
gotta love dattos!!!

The wires in the points can also get loose and touch the side of the dizzy body. This will stop the engine instantly. It happened to me.

it was the points...
my uncle pulled mine out and all he could say was "shit" he hadn't seen points that worn ever.
