Hey guys.
Need some advice again on My Datsun 1200 delux

Firstly I do know that my universal joints at my prop shaft is on its way out, However I dont understand why I've got a weird noise and feeling when reversing.
Sound like a gearbox problem or is it?
When moving forward, theres no noises except for the cling noise from the prop shaft when changing gears.

Any suggestions and remedies as to how to sort out this problem welcome.

if it is a whine, then it is porbally the normal noise that you get in reverse. I thnk that it is realted to the factthat reverse doesent have syncros.

Could be the answer, but I am not a box guru, gearbox that is...

Thanks for the reply bro, however the noise aint windy, it sort of a grinding noise.
Its getting me a bit worried.

well if its is a grindy noise, then I dont think that the outlook is flash. You can either replace the box, which is an easy job, or just be gentle with it, and hope that it keeps on hanging on. Probally the best option if you dont drive far from a workshop or home, but if you travel a bit, then replacing it will put your minid at rest.
Me I would just put up with it, as I dont travel far, and I have 3 spares.

I love how you just stated the changing of boxes was "EASY"....when I changed mine over I took it 2 a mechanic friend of mine who said that too..
He then found out how "NOT EASY" it is....cheers.

Replacing a 1200 gearbox is easy compared to most cars ... for example, I can lift it into place without using a jack. Try that with a Ford or GM rwd vehicle.

My reverse was very noisy at one stage 2. When eva i used 2 reverse it was sort of in between a winding noise and a really bad scrapping noise. My reverse always used 2 slip out. What i found when i finally got it replaced was that my reverse was missin several teeth and they where grinding inside the box somewhere or somethin!

An old 1200 coupe of mine used to make that ding noise. Turned out that it was stretching the rear tailshaft yolk bolts, making it loose.

About lifting boxes, We used 4 guys, plus the spanner man to lift into place my pootrol box. Sure it had the transfer case as well, but we took the doors off, put a 2" bar thru the cab, with a chain thru the gearstick hole.
Then a jack holding the weight,with two guys pushing it into place underneath the car, with another putting in the bolts.
Two guys were lifting the box from the top with the pole thru the doors. Massive job, and never again.

Yeah changing a datto gearbox is simple.

SHEEESH thats a LOT of guys to replace 1 gearbox
my jeep box is a 2 man job
i wonder how hard it woulb to replace a gear box in 1 f them big mining trucks.. u no the ones that were on here witrh the disc brakes... ####! that would be a mission and a half
