i did a search and came up with nothing
and i dont want to have to buy a book just for the points gap i thaught thats what this forumwas for to healp each other out

The correct setting for the points in a Datsun should be between 49 to 55 degrees of dwell. This is really the best way to do it, so grab your dwell angle meter & set the points to 49 degrees & as they wear, the figure will move towards the 55 degree figure.

Once the points are correctly adjusted, then set the timing & you're set to go. Check them at about 1,000 miles as new points wear quickly, then again at about 5,000 miles for maximum return on your tune up.

You will find that the $10 to $20 spent on a service & repair manual will save you a lot of wasted time money & effort. It is the best bargain that you will ever buy for your car.

Hi rb20,
Distibutor Points Gap - 0.45 - 0.55 mm.
or if you want imp - 0.018 - 0.022 in.

While we're at it Plug gap is 0.8 - 0.9mm.

And yes Dodgeman is correct, best way to set it is with a dwell meter, remembering that
1. The wider the points gap, the smaller the dwell angle &
2. The smaller the points gap, the larger the dwell.
Aim for 49 - 55 deg if you have a meter.

Your dead right, thats what its for, I think sometimes the more experienced guys get a bit to technical when there is no need to. A simple question like that should be just answered.

You should only set gap with new points. For worn points, a feeler gauge will not be accurate. Better just to 'eyeball' it if you don't have a dwell meter.

If you correctly set the dwell angle, you will ALWAYS have the correct gap, no matter what it measures.
Once you have correctly adjusted the points, you will need to set the timing, as variation in the points gap will affect the timing. As the points wear, the timing retards.

As i, & others, have writen many times before, a manual is the best investment you can make on car maintainance.

yes i agree buff i can pull a motor down and put it back togeather with my eyes shut but right now i dont need to but when i do then i will buy a manual

yes guys i do have a dwell meter but i have to remember how to set it up cause its been so long since i have had a car with points hehe ill probebly go electronic aventually any way
