Fj20? Sr20? CA18? what to go with?

well now that i have a roadworthy coupe to play with, i am thinking about some engines, more than an a14 or A series..... a few to choose, wondering what would be the pro's and con's
of FJ20, Ca18, SR20? in relation to the legal requirements (govt. laws and compliancing). It will be naturally aspirated, so reliability, yet power and economy. Also easiest to put in (computers? physical size?), and of course price and availibility... any advice or why you chose to use what?? cheers ben

Well, if your going for NA, i would choose the SR for sure. The FJ NA are also very strong but not as light as the all alloy block of the SR. The CA NA would be ok but CA18det are
a better conversion. Im sure the FJ would be a bastard to fit. I've helped fit an FJ into a 1600 and that was a challenge. I've only ever seen the SR20 NA's in pulsar etc.. I've never actually pulled one out of a car but they look great. Want NA - SR20de Want Turbo - CA18det Scott Davo

Is the CA18DET all aluminum? I thnk the FJ would be too heavy for the light 1200.
In any case, I am doing the SR20DET into my '72 coupe. Being stateside, I don't have the FJ or CA options you guys have. Even at that my SR is from Japan (no RWD SR's over here). HP for an SR20DET should be comparable to Andrew's CA18DET. I'll run an T3/T04B hybrid turbo (bigger than the CA18's T25) at 15psi which should be good for 320hp at the crank. In any case, you might want to deicide how much you can REALLY afford. Staying with stock DET's will get you the most power per dollar. Going with a CA18DE/SR20DE will probably still be cheaper than a built A14. Dave Lum '72 coupe getting SR20DET (www.datsuns.com/projects/1200) '71 1600 w/ VG30DE www.datsuns.com

I don't really know much about the regs down under but all three motors are capable of plenty of power and reliability. I wouldn't reckon on an FJ20 in N/A form and I think it would be
difficult to fit in a turbo version. I have just got an FJ20DET and it's huge compared with a CA18. Really it's just down to CA or SR. SR is probably gonna be lighter but I'd reckon a CA would be easier to fit. Which ever route you go there are people here who have been there before so will be able to offer their wisdom. Given the choice I'd go with an SR20DET if you can get one for sensible money. Have you checked out the SR 1200s on Autospeed? http://www.autospeed.com/members/A_0420/article.html Good luck, Eddie

I used to have an SR20DET in my Datsun 1200 coupe which was never going to be legal! The more I thought about that factor the more I thought about discontinuing the project (which I did).
I did get everything in and all fitted quite easily. I saw and took pictures of a datsun 1600 with an NA s15 SR20 in it on the weekend. The guy managed to pick it up for $2000 AU with only 2000km's on the clock! If you could manage to pick one of these up you'd have a nice NA little package! I haven't checked out the specs of this engine but I'm sure they'd put out a bit of power. You can view topic.
