Hard to say what's wrong with your car ...

But, one of the most common car problems (for old or new cars) is when the battery cables get corroded. The dash lights may come on, but when you try to start it, nothing. This is fixed by removing the cables and cleaning the cable ends and posts.

If you short the hot terminal and the start terminal directly on the starter, does it start then? This should help narrow it down a little to the starter or something before the starter.

Yeh, do as ang94541 said,
However if its not that, I'sd suggest checking the lug behind the ignition switch.

These Ignition barrels are not so expensive brand new.
Dont bother buying it 2nd hand.

Otherwise do as I've down.
Keep the original barrel in, use a starter switch button.
So, once the key is on the ON position, just use the button to crank up.

I placed the button switch in the place of the cigarette lighter hole,

Walllah, almost keyless ignition

check the cable from neg to the earth on the chassis and the earth lead on the block. put multimeter on neg terminal and check resistance between it and the block(try a few places so its a consistant reading)should be nearly no resistance or none.
