1200rallycar Posted on: 2004/11/8 7:46
just considering the CADET conversion still, wondering what people have done for an exhaust system, size? cost? and layout?

mainly concerned about cost as im doing the sums at the moment

I got a cat off another car and 'hi flowed it. Cat cost $30.
Then I took my car down to the exhaust shop. They whacked on a 2.5" pressbent exhaust, which cost me $250 (I think).
All I had to supply was dump pipe (modified silvia dump with exhaust flange.
But thats the cheaper end of the scale, you could go with a 3" mandrel bent which is about $700-$1000.

Mine cost $700 that was 3" off the turbo mandrel bends with a hi flow cat and stainless muffler.

Last time, I ran 2.5 inch straight through, I never really got good performance.

Andrew D, ran 3inch up until axle, and 2.5 inch over the axle for ~180kW (from memory)

I'm running 3inch mandrel this time.

I might HAVE to run 2.5inch mandrel over the axle, due to the modified rear suspension.

Stainless mufflers are a good idea for everyday city drivers. But for weekend users, a mild steel system is the best "exhaust note" option.

Titanium systems are for tossers with too much money, or for 11/10th effort racers.

I've already made a mild steel dump/front pipe, and am now looking for ways to squeeze a cat and 2 mufflers on my 1200 sedan. Cost $70. On a modified turbo system, getting the dump pipe right is critical. My turbo has been moved 15cms forward, so I can run a 45deg angle to under the car. It's a much better solution that the ~90deg bend most Silvia dump pipes do. The rest of my system will cost about $250 for the 3inch cat, and $250 for mandrel bends, $300 for mufflers (2 of) also need a hotdog resonator. Turbo engines sounds buggered with no resonator and only a straight through muffler.

So I'll run:
3inch dump/frontpipe
3inch cat
3inch hotdog
3inch straight through Lukey
3inch N1 style rear muffler 4 inch tip ( no leaf springs )

Go and make some friends at an exhaust place, maybe they can get you some second hand stuff from a new low kays car. 2.5 inch would be fine for a budget system.

Cheers,
Chris

3" from turbo back in mild steel. Straight thru muffler probably off a truck. Comes out in front of rear wheel. only two bends and remarkably quiet. About as cheap as possible and about as good for performance as possible too probably. Not sure whether it's legal... I have my doubts

I made up my own 3" dump pipe from a mandrel bend, then I took the car down to the exhaust shop and they made up a 3" mandrel bent system with out a cat, supprisingly it wasnt that louid.

Now im building up my 1200 ute and Im going to use a different turbo, I have started making a high mount manifold and im usuing a t3 off a rb25det

as Im not usuing the other exhaust it is up for sale if anyone is interested,
Im after $350 for it including the dump pipe,
I can get some pics if any one wants me to

remember there is no need to run a cat on a ute becasue they are classified as a commerical vehicle.

I'm guessing you recommend stainless because it lasts forever. Stock-type steel mufflers only last about 10 years, off-brands sometimes less.

Are you saying that mild steel mufflers sound better than stainless? Can you elaborate?

My exhaust is 3" right through with mandrel bends and a custom split dump pipe. I also had the exhaust shop make me a pipe to replace the cat. for the track. Apparently if the catalytic converter gets too hot it starts to disintegrate. All up cost was around the $1000 mark.
