if you can afford it, the best bet is to pay an expert trimmer to do it, the next option would be a "truefit" moulded carpet from rare spares. I have seen some real hash jobs by people trying to do it by themselves and it ultimately cost more in the end.

I am getting new interior carpet in my 1200 from Knox Auto Carpets in Melbourne, Australia. Their moulded 1200 carpet for a car is A$105 + A$50 shipping to NZ. There is a firm in Auckland who quoted me NZ$220 + shipping for 1200 carpet. Knox Auto CarpetsKnox Auto Carpets

A moulded carpet means that it has been shaped to fit the contours of your specific car, eg the tranny tunnel, etc. With these, there is a lot less fiddling around than carpet straight off a roll. I recently fitted moulded carpets to my 120Y and there were only a few headaches. The trick is to not rush the job and don't cut ANYTHING until you are 1000% sure.

The original carpet is only lightly molded; the Datsun 1200 floor is quite square compared to most vehicles. There are four pieces:
Front R.H. Front Tunnel Front L.H. Rear (also covers under seat area) Compared to other cars, it's very easy to carpet a 1200 from bulk material.

Just how much cutting is required with the moulded carpets?

The carpets from the Nissan dealer require no cutting. They just lay in place.
