NSW young driver restrictions

I see on the news that they are going to BAN turbo and V8s for young drivers in NSW atm.....
Not good news for you young lads with CA18det 1200s and other turbo ones. Im not sure when its going to come in but most likely very soon. I think the goverment is Starting at the wrong end of the stick, i mean anybody can be an idot in any type of car with any motor! all cars can go fast and kill. What about motorbikes? they havent mentioned anything about these yet... If and when these restrictions come in we are goning to see some very fast N/A 1200s going round NSW, maybe FJs, CA's,SR's,12A's etc etc because you can only kill yourself in v8's and turbos apparently Cheers... what everyone else think?

I fully support the move, how many times do you see on the news about some young kit writing off or killing themselves and or others because they were driving a fast car. It's the spoilt little kids who gets a fast car bought for them so they don't take much care as they didn't have to SAVE hard in order to get it.
Anyways thats my $0.02 worth

This was discussed after the recent spate of accidents in NSW, involving young people and high powered cars.
To have a high speed accident in a "normal" powered car is much much harder. You've gotta try ![]() A turbo monster can go 0-100 in 4 seconds.. That's not much time to change your mind about what you are doing. Cars are nothing like motorbikes, the risks of doing stupid things on a bike are apparent to 99% of the people who use them, landing on your ass a few times while you are learning, has a way of "learnin you" really fast. I think the law will be targetting WRXs, Hot Imports and V8 or Turbo Falcon /Commodores etc...

Heaps of young drivers die in old bomb cars too, But its not really news worthy.. These kids in wrxs' and skylines are just the flavour of the month..
Would you rather hit a telegraph pole at 80 kph (or 100kph) in a 120Y or a V8 commodore? I don't think the ban will have much effect on the annual road toll. I hope it is NOT introduced. However more driver training (say a two day course like to get your motor cycle licence in NSW)

Im 34 so it doesnt bother me now. It will when some pimply faced kids has one of my four daughters in their car.
They have had restrictions on bikes for some time. It makes sense really...kids in high powered cars/bikes are a lethal combination. In fact any kid behind a wheel of any car or motorbike is a lethal combination. if anyone really thinks they can drive...and I mean really drive...they should get in a formula ford and do a state round and see how incompetent at driving they really are...

Im 19 and i pretty much agree 2 the ban. I will go through the cars all my best mates have:
308 wb ute Mitsubishi starion(turbo) 350 1tonner 308 torana V8 commodore All there parent regret them having these cars. The funny thing is all of them are younger than me and there all s#*t at driving. Its bloody scary watchin them behind the wheel. I firstly decided 2 by a small car that isnt capable of doing high speeds, but still has class. I did this as i was still young and not like all those other d@#k head P platters who think there all that. In a way i hope the no high speed cars law is introduced not just to reduce the fatalitys but just to stop young kids thinkin there king s#*t behind the wheel of somethin powerful!!!!.It pisses you of seein a P platter fly past driven daddys car. Thats my opion anyway

Tommy mate..good one.
I see the same. My old man once said "If I buy you a car..you'll not treat it as good as you would if you bought it yourself". Daddy's car....this is a massive factor. I'd love to see the statistics.

BINGO You hit it right on the nail. My daughter is 15 & it's my job to ensure that she makes it to 21, or untill she is married if sooner, in the best of health. NO-ONE will stand in the way of that objective without suffering the consequences, & if i find that someone is driving her around in an unsafe manner, i will take whatever steps are necessary to make sure it doesn't happen again. Read into that whatever you like, such is a fathers love. I applaud the general thrust of the proposed legislation, but not necessarily all of the actual proposals. Turning unskilled young riders loose on high performance motorcycles was nipped in the bud when the statistics showed quite clearly that this was a bad idea, & now the statistics are showing us that another combination is not such a good idea either. Too many people who think they can drive, & have an opinion of their skills that is not matched in practice. One needs only to monitor this site for a while to read of how some of our members tell us of their bravado acts of derring-do. I have seen the unskilled drivers around here, & i see their cars in the panel shops or wreckers all too often. Unfortunately, as usual, it's the few who spoil it for the many, but don't cry to me about draconian legislation, I'm a lawfull gun owner, so i know all about persecution of the innocent by our elected government.

i agree with the bans too...
i never used to... but i agree now because my daily driver is a VS commodore ute.. V8 5speed LSD.. (its not as fierce as a datto! :).. but its still dangerous) although im only 23 now... i know for a fact that if i had this car when i was 18 that i would have crashed it... no doubt in my mind.... espeicially when wet weather is involved...

ban them all till 21, no v8's or turbos please lokks like the way it will be from feb-march next year..... skyline gtsts will come doen in resale once more and insurance hopefully will also go down for these types of cars too.
In reality.... the forst couple of years are going to be bad, people will revolt anddrive thesecars anyway with a few more big accidents to highlight the fact but in the longrun with the proper training, not these 8 1hour lessons bullcrap, it will be beneficial within 5 years to the greater community. a lot of young kids of today have got it too easy and should have restrictins on them as they have no resepct for rules and laws or even each other. At least dattos will become popular again. There are just as many 6cyl commodores and falcons wrapped around trees etc, they are more than powerfull enough to kill with... 4cyl cars are the go for all till 21, i chose 4cyl cars to learn to drive, its where you learn the basics You can view topic.
