Clutch problems

I have recently finished re-building an A14 for my brother in-laws ute, Up until last week i was in Sth Aus, on site working in the mines, Being a little impatient he put the motor and gearbox in the car without me there and as a result the clutch will not engage at all, the pedal feels really 'floppy' but when you tighten it up the adjuster nut you can hear it slow the engine down(when running). it is a brand new RPM Heavy duty clutch, he assures me that it was all put together correctly, but i think he wouldn't know!
I'm not real keen on pulling the thing apart, so is there any ideas on what the problem could be??? Any ideas at all??????

Sounds like the clutch plate might be in back to front
