i currently dont own a datsun. but if all goes to plan ill own one soon.

im thinkin of a 1200 with an A14 (or A15). im happy to do alot of work myself. my budget is (looking to be) about 5k, (possibly 6).

what do you more experienced people recomend? put an a14 in myself? buy something thats already had alot of work done? or go on a completly different path alltogether?

any comments would be muchly appreciated

It is fairly easy to put an A14 in, so you can do it yourself.

I recommend buying an already running 1200, with A12 or not so that you don't have much down time, and can start enjoying driving it right away.

Monetarily speaking, it is often best to buy one already modified similar to what you want.

so what are some 'must have' mods for the a14. ive been lookin around this and other sites for a while so i have a kinda have some ideas. but nothin concrete.

The only must have item I can think of would be a good set of extractors.

They are fun to drive straight out of the box, but the world is your oyster.

Big single carb, twin SUs, twin webers, turbo charged ,or supercharged its all been done before and there are plenty of pics and descriptions of how to go about it right here.

Use the search function to the left of the screen and you can find out anything you want to know.

Personally I would go for the A15 but there are plenty of hot A14s out there.

do you think im being realistic with my price range? i dont want a race car or a show car. just something fun to work on and fun to ride in!

($5-6k includes car)

sidedraught, what is the difference between the A14 and A15 apart from the cubes'? Is it just the bore or just the stroke or is there more differance.

Shaun recently sold an A14 turbo on this site for $1000.

I think an A15 with electronic ignition sold on Ebay for about $500 last week.

You can buy a really good Datsun for a lot less than $5000.

i think im leanin towards buyin a stock 1200 and doing it myself...

random thought??? if i put a a14 (eg) in a 1200, i wouldnt need the stock motor right. so assuming im not in a rush to drive it, would it be worth looking for a car thats heaps cheap due to being mechanically crap? i hope that makes sense?

only problem with mechanically crap cars are that there seem to be more mechnical problems than just the motor and gear box that seem to surface after you fix one area.
As long as its pretty straight and rust free, the rest is easy and chaep to fix... but fix it once properly or you will keep fixing it and paying more to do it too.
