#1 What is the best way to store an engine?
sprite63 Posted on: 2005/8/5 2:54
Further to a post I put in earlier in the week about re-commissioning an old A14 engine - can anyone give me some advise about the best way to store my A12 engine (which currently is in great condition) when I pull it out?

Should I fill the thing up with oil, wrap it up and store it in a dry place in the corner of my garage and turn the crank around every couple of weeks?

just put in under a cover and drain the water and fill it with soluble oil, and squirt oil in the cylinders, my turbo motor has been sitting next to my workbench for ages just crank it over every few months.just dont cut up[ metal and #### next to it like it did, i think im gonna have to pull the sump off and make sure its not full of filings

I stored my motorbike for four years by first, running it on diesel until it stopped, this coated all the carb with oil and protected it. Then poured oil down spark plug hole and then replaced plug.

Four yrs later, removed plug, and kicked it over to pump oil out. Drained diesel from tank and replaced with unleaded. Replaced spark plug. Kicked it over hundreds of times and it started. Ran it till the smoke had stopped from the diesel, and Bob's your uncle!!!

I was recommended this method by my mechanic neighbour.

Killer1200... sorry mate, I was away all weekend. The engine could be sitting for a few years - not really sure. I keep thinking of different projects that I could stick it in as it's a great engine and I want to use it.

Ray, that would have to be the weirdest advice I think I have ever read (besides putting bananas into a noisy diff) but it really makes sense to do that. If it looks like I can't find something else to stick it in then I might just do what you said.

Thanks Guys.
