#1 Release bearing issues
dattodevil Posted on: 2005/8/21 9:37
Ok, fitted my engine up this weekend, it's an A15 with a very thin A12 flywheel, mated to a 5 speed Gearbox. Now the issue is, I seem to run out of throw on my release bearing, the cable is adjusted right out but then it hits on the front of the bell housing opening i.e no throw at all.

I have compared the 4 and 5 speed release bearing carrier, and found only 2mm difference in overall length, which I doubt is enough to make a difference. If I refit the A15 flywheel, then it will work fine again, but then where is the fun in that?

Been to Repco and found they only list 1 press on release bearing so I know that's not the issue, so any suggestions or experiences? I was thinking of making up a 5mm spacer to fit behind the release bearing but didn't want to push it too far off the carrier

Here is the picture of my clutch assembly for reference

You will need to fit an A14 or A15 bearing
carrier to compensate for the differance in
the height of the 2 flywheel contact surfaces
Cheers

The release bearing carrier already is an A15 one. I have taken an A15 out and Put a fresh A15 in. The only difference is the flywheel. Although it does bring to the point is the A12 bearing carrier alot longer than the A15 one?

Yes they are a different length, for memory
more than 2mm but yes use the same bearing. We have been caught before with
our race car and have to be carefull when
doing rebuilds not to get the various options
mixed up or out it comes again. Some carefull
measuring required.

Thanks bert, I will look into it. It's funny beacause this is the first I have heard of it. I had a feeling that there must be a difference, but up until now, nobody has mentioned it.

If you cant sort it out there is always the option of putting spacers on the clutch fork pivot point. I have had to do this on some race set ups.

I am presently looking at either fitting a spacer or finding an A12 carrier. I have three gearboxs here and they all have the same carrier, but I doubt they all came off the back of an A15. Does anyone know the exact measurement difference between the two? I was thinking maybe 5mm?

Ok, I have pulled the gearbox out and measured the difference between the two. I get 7mm which means a spacer just wont cut it (as the shank is only 12mm long), so I have sent it to my engineer who will modify 2 to make one, unless of course someone has a long A12 one in Christchurch

sounds like you have it all sorted out, but some good advice from exp. Better take notes on all your modifications for later reference. I have done lots of modifying and later on had to replace some parts and got year model parts mixed up,lol

Ok, here's a picture on what was modified, body extended by 7mm, could have gone a touch more but it works with a brand new clutch, so no problem there.
