Electric 1200 sets new 1/4 Mile Record for the SC/A NEDRA Class

Hello to All,
I've just rejoined this group and wanted to post about my recent success at getting my electric 1200 down the 1/4 mile a bit quicker. At the NEDRA races in Woodburn, OR over Labr Day, 'White Zombie', my electridied '72 1200 street legal sedan, posted a 12.598 @ 103.92 mph on street legal BF Goodrich Drag radials. The current (pun intended) setup is my new 'Siamese 8' twin armature electric motor coupled direct drive (no flywheel, clutch or tranny) via an aluminum driveline to a Dutchman Motorsports rear axle setup with Ford 9 inch w/Detroit Locker & Strange 4:57 gears, and 31 spline axles. Battery power comes from 29 small 26 ahr, 24 lb. Hawker Aerobatteries@ 348V run through a Zilla 2000 amp motor controller. We never turned the battery current limit any higher than 900 amps (we can safely go as high as 1500 amps), and had to back off the controller as we were traction limited at anything higher than 1500 motor amps (1500 amps in series mode, 2000 amps in parallel mode), when we ran the above time. We''re hitting the PIR track this weekend in hopes of running a 12.3 @ ~ 106 mph with the controller turned up a bit after some mods to the traction bar length. Go to http://www.plasmaboyracing.com and click on 'videos' to see a 104 mph 1/4 mile run. See Ya....John 'Plasma Boy' Wayland

Hi John - welcome back to the club. Had a quick read of your site and am very impressed by the continued development. Really keen to see the videos but they won't download for me. Any luck for other users?

We're hitting the track tonight to see if we can run a 12.4 or lower. >Really keen to see the videos but they won't download for me. All it takes, is to use Quick Time Player, available for free on line. See Ya...John Wayland

Hello to All,
by killer1200 on 2005/9/14 8:59:43 >Dam that's fast. >Whats it weigh? I haven't put it on the scale yet, but I'm usually within 20-40 lbs. of my estimates. I'm thinking it will weigh in at 2250 - 2300 lbs. That's heavy for a gasser 1200, but very light in terms of a converted electric car, where the usual small car weighs around 2700 -3000 lbs. due to battery pack weight focused on the longest range per charge. My 1200 race car is focused on going fast with not too much of a concern about getting the most range per charge, thus it has a 696 lb. pack of ultra-high performance high current batteries, instead of a 900-1100 lb. pack of lower current but higher ahr rated batteries for range. The range per charge is still enough to easily run around town, and of course, drive to and from the race track! See Ya....John Wayland

Hi John, waiting with baited breath to see you back on the club!!! Welcome!!
I was wondering if I could have your thoughts on what it would take to build an electric road car which has some good range inbetween charges and or a hybrid using the 1200 engine maybe even running on LPG...so zero emmissions or very minimal anyway.... This is Ive decided my next project. Oh by the way i want to try and do this for under $5k. After this I want to build an all electric race car (circuit)probably an open wheeler.... so I'd love your opinion on this as I know the time is ripe these days for this technology....
