#1 cracks between valve seats on oval port heads
datsonovic Posted on: 2005/9/15 11:54
hey datophiles,
iv had a bit of an ongoing argument with an engineer for a couple of years now and I wonder if any of you fellow a series enthusiasts coluld offer your thoughts?
A few weeks after a fairly heavy dyno session: 105 rwkw at 6000 with 18 psi of boost (i couldn`t run full boost 30 psi because of wheel spin) I noticed some sludge on the 710 cap.
I pulled the head off expecting to see great chunks of head gasket missing but no the gasket was fine. It did have a broken inner valve spring on ex. no.3.
I took the head apart to put in a new set of gx springs and cleaned it up only to find cracks between every valve seat and some fairly heavy corosion in the water jackets i had the thing fully rebuilt (new seats, new guides, new springs grinding and filling of cracks and corosion blah blah blah)
I put a .8 mm head shim on (after they refaced the head) and all was good. A few weeks later i was getting a fair bit of oil smoke on start up so off came the head again only to find every inlet valve guide broken.
I took it in to try and sort things out. First they rekon that because i put on a head shim it changed the rocker goemetry and I should pay for the rebuild i say bollocks to that.
You could put a 1 inch head shim on and the geometry would remain the same (as long as you have 1 inch rocker adjusters). I rekon they didn`t seat the valves in deep enough after they rebuilt the cracks between the seats but they wont have a bar of it they put new guides in and are getting a set of lash caps for it (18 months ago).
I got the head back off them under the provision that i pay for the work when they get the lash caps.
I put another stock a15 oval port head on but before i put it on i clened it up and noticed the same cracks between the seats as on the other head. Iv had this head on for 18 months or so and it still goes like stink ( s13,r32,hsv) last week.
Iv had this shiney freshly rebuilt head sitting in the shed for 18 months or so but i wont put it on because it will just break the guides again im not keen on the lash cap idea any thoughts?

It's always hard when you have a go at engineers, but if you think you're right you gotta stand your ground.
