#1 HELP lose flywheel
olboy Posted on: 2005/9/25 8:45
Ok guys I,m about to burn my dato. I keep spinning the flywheel of at high revs (8000 up) I know the problem is the driver missing a gear but the speedway guys get realy big revs out of these motors, why can't I. I,ve lost count of the times I've spun it lose over the past three years and I'm sick of it. Ive tried locktight both on the end of the cranksharft and on the bolts, the last time I used ARP toyota 4Age bolts and they didn,t work, Its been balanced (Twice). Anyone know what the speedway guys do I can,t keep this up. Olboy

The speedway guys dont have flywheels. They are push starded elininating the need for a flywheel or drive plate, The also dont run gears its all opperated through the diff you are either in gear, or out of gear (no clutch).

Thats how the speedway guys do it.

Andrew.

wouldn't they still need some sort of flywheel though

Nope

the block bolts directly to a engine plate, then through a uni joint vai to a diff.

May sound weird but thats how it is uaually done.

No flywheel
No Clutch
No Starter motor
No gears

I wonder if you could set up a clutch on a flex plate and do away with the flywheel.

Most Victorian Mini Sprints still run flywheels.

First make sure it is machined down to lightest you can get it.

Then when you get your bottom end balanced again get the machinist to dowel it for you. Should be good for about 10,000 rpm.

By the way, when you get it balanced also get them to do it with the clutch pressure plate fitted.

Dowling is only extra insurance. Balancing is the best protection.

Yep, the dowel is as you explained it.

And yes, balance is absolutely necessry, the dowels just help stop any radial movement of the flywheel on the crank.

You could also do this, just grab yourself a Tilton 7" clutch and bolt it up.

If only it was as easy as it sounds, but can be done none the less.
