#1 Rim size?
Ronald Posted on: 2005/12/21 7:37
gday gday.
wondering whats the biggest set of wheels u can get on a 1200 ute,

i measured the front wheel arches, and the driver side has about an inch of clearence from the firewall (thats the minimum gap i could get, turning right about 1 turn of s/wheel)

i currently have ittie biddie 155/80R 12 rubber all round, which i measured came to an overall diameter of 550mm

i was thinking of putting on 15" rims with 195/50R 15 tyres (50 series being the lowest pro. i could find for 15" rims )
these came to an overall diam. of 574 mm (if falkens info is correct)

has anyone else put anything like this on their ute?
i have seen 17" rims on one, but i think the firewall would of been chopped up a bit to get them in.

any comments are helpful

Hi there ronald.
there is heaps of info in the posts about this, you may find the search tool useful

574 is about right for a 195/50R15, 577 is the number I found. they are the same dia as a 185/60/14 which is what I have and fit fine except for a bit of flaring and cutting the front corner of the guards off. can get 45 series 15's if you look hard and are prepared to pay.

I have seen as big as 17in but they tend to leave the car very high off the ground.

15" will fit will minor rolling of guards bashing of firewall and 17s fit as well. My mate has some on his ute but there is scrub issues which could probably be fixed with a little bit of grinding/cutting/rewelding or serious bashing.

yeh thanks guys, i think the 36" mud terrainers sound good!
nah, ill stick with the 15" rims and try find some 45 rubber.
when the car is gettin sprayed at the panel beaters ill get them to roll the guards/"individualise" the firewall.

heres a 17" wheel on my datto had to modify the front guards a bit as you can see in the pick also shortened the radius rods so that the wheel dosent hit the firewall

and I thought you shorten or get adjustable radius rods to increase castor and improve the car's handling... shows what I know!

a 195/50*15 should fit with gaurd lipping and some minor trimming from the front edge of the wheelarch opening (see below) IF its on the right wifth/offset wheel! But you will probably need to pump/flare the gaurd a little as well.

I also had adjustable castor rods on the car in that pic for more castor, so the wheel is further forward than would be standard. You may need to do that too, to avoid having to mod the footwell like this I did when I fitted bolt-on flares and much wider wheels.

righto thanks again fellas.

i managed to find some kumho 195/45R15 tyres.
so i think theyll go on to make it that little bit easier fiting (looks dont count )

P.S. who makes adj radius rods for a B120 (a 1200 ute, i hope i got it rite )
i was thinking of gettin a maddat rebuilt frontend anyway, so ill guess ill put the adj, radius rods on then.

this is a link to the maddat front end (just scroll down a bit.) Maddat Suspension/Steering

you can't buy them off the shelf, but you can get yours modified. They just turn down a section of the rod and cut the thread further along. Adjustment/location is performed by means of nuts on either side of the mount. Any competant suspension specialist should be able to do it for around $100 pr, but large franchises may not want to know about it - more interested in selling fitting off the shelf components.

stewart wilkins at swrallying here in sydney,(if you could call windsor sydney,it's closer to perth in my opinion).i got a set a few years ago, plus getting another set in a car i bought,
& have been used in rally cars,so they have stood up to punishment.

if you're going to get somebody to machine the standard ones, make sure he puts a radius on the corners, because a right angle is an invitation for the part to crack & break at this point, resulting in at the least an interesting handling situation,if you could call it interesting,
& at worst an accident with serious consequences.
