#1 Radiator? sr20 1200 conversion.
Homer Posted on: 2006/3/5 8:26
Hi Just wondering what people are using for a radiator in the sr20 into 1200 conversion.

I am getting closer to finishing it off and need to know what radiator to use.
its a stock sr20 n/a engine with a stumpy box behind it. if any one has any ideas please let me know.

use a n14sss pulsar radiator they are pretty cheap and very thin ideal for large engine conversions, they are the biggest radiator u can fit in a 1200. also they are very easy to make mounts for as they are held in place by four small dowels i spose u could call them.

Just use the SR20 radiator from the S13. They fit nicely. Not sure where you are from, but i got one here in brisbane i'll part with cheap if you want to go that option

Lucky you .....I have just sweat blood over the last few weeks on this very subject and have agonised buying 5 radiators to try and get one that fits right. Well finally only just today I have come across the solution...one which works. You need a light, thick cored alloy radiator which has the upper hose to the left hand side, which then enters the engine on the thermostat side and the lower hose enters the engine on the exhaust side. The radiator needed to be cheap, easy to get and will do the cooling.
And the winner was....
VN Series 2 to VS Commodore
Right size width and height, light alloy and thick core big cooling capacity and cheap!!!!

Hi Craig,
Could you post a pic when you have time.

Cheers,

Paul.

180 SX radiator is what i used there is some pics in my album.

Also with these thin radiators it is a good idea to get some thermo fans because in traffic on a hot day they have a bit of trouble cooling.

Using the N13 radiator, mine has a 'some trouble' cooling. Never boils, but certainly isn't steady on 35degC+ days. It also meant that runs on the dyno would make the engine temps skyrocket.

You really must 'open up' the front panel to get as much air as possible through the radiator. Requires some reinforcement around the radiator hole to maintain the frontal strength in the radiator support panel.

I would estimate that the poor engine bay of my 1200 has twice the volume of stuff in there, and 20% more heat. There is just nowhere for the heat to go on a hot day. Putting vents in the guards via some piping from the top corner of the firewall, into the cabin and back out through to the guards would be a good modification.

I'm thinking about a dual row aluminium radiator as used on silvias etc, but a 1200 would be better off with a slightly shorter/narrower radiator though, to improve intercooler piping placement. And to retain the mounting points for the grille.

Chris the VN radiator is seriously alot bigger than the N13 and I think your problems with "hotness" would cease to exist.
By the way I will be using a permacool 250hp engine oil cooler as well as a finned and baffled sump on the SR, which if I didnt have my front splitter / spolier installed would catch sustantial airflow as well.
I want my temps to sit on 80 all day every day no matter what harshness I deal to the engine....
Remember in every case:-
HEAT IS YOUR ENGINES WORST ENEMY...next to throwing iron filings in the inlet ports!!!!!!!
