just wondering if any one knew wat the actual size (length) difference between a sss stanxa 5 speed (or stumpy skyline box) and a normal L series 4 speed (say L20B 4 speed), or if anyone has a comparison pic between the 2.
or a pic of where the gearstick is in relation to the standard gearstick hole im to poor at the moment to go hunting for gearboxs for my 1200, so i want to see if i can get an idea of the difference so i can try to fit the L series in

I dont believe there is any difference. Although I have a stumpy box which i just took out of my 1600. It mounted to the same place, came through the same hole and had the same length tailshaft.
Hope this helps. Richard

so why is it advised to use a sss stanza 5speed or a stumpy skyline box for an L series conversion
are they just stronger or have better ratios?

Don't know about the Stanza box, but the stumpy Skyline oine has the gearlever further foward than the others, it's much closer to the original position in the 1200 tunnel.

Bigger/stronger internals due to the 71mm over 63mm mainshaft to layshaft distance.
Strength of a L6 box but keeping the box short is a bonus in 1200. You will end up with the shifter pretty far back if you don't. You can view topic.
