got a 3inch system fitted this week but the bloke didnt put in a sensor thingy for that thing on the dump pipe off the turbo, i know its an air sensor of sorts, my question is, is it very important to the runnings of the engine, and can i just leave it out????
cheers for any help, im gunna find out how important it is when we start it i spose

most likly you are talking about the o2 sensor(oxygen sensor). and yes it is required for your motor to run properly. it senses how much unburned air/feul is exiting through the exhaust and automaticaly adjust the feul injection to compensate.

i wasnt sure on that one, i have done an exhaust system on an sr20 and it ran like crap without the o2 sensor. same with an 86 ranjet350 transamm

Flyby's CA ran without a lot of things..truely supernatural...
You need it if you want good fuel economy. Get a replacement one from the wreckers for $10-20 ($80-$110 new). 0v - 1V after 5 minutes of engine running. That's the test of success.. Cheers.

oxygen sensors are nto vital and arent run on many hi-po cars but if u dont mind bad fuel economy and an engine that doesnt recognise what sort of fuel its running on (doesnt matter if u run same fuel all the time) then go without it.
it makes tuning a lot harder with the O2 sensor buggering up ur maps. and like i sed, if u change fuels ur car will run rougher than it should. if u do decide to put 1 in its worth spending a few extra bob and gettin a "lambda wide band" oxygen sensor. dont ask me how they do it but they're alot better than anything that came out of a factory setup.

wideband sensors are finer calibrated and produce 0v->5v. (Unlike normal ones 0v -> 1v)
ECU needs to be able to work with one!, so unless the ecu is re-chipped, factory ECUs definitely wont work with a wideband o2 sensor. Chris

i have one that i got with the 1/2 cut thats no drama, but the exhaust bloke forgot to allow for the sensor when he welded it up, i was told by another bloke that it'd run rough without one.
just means to get it fixed i gotta lose the ute for another couple of days, been delayed alot lately

The sensor thingy is the oxygen sensor.. Yes you can run a car without it. The problem is though when the car goes into closed loop mode in the ecu it needs the o2 sensor to read the levels in the exhaust to adjust the fuel mixture. A car goes into closed loop mode whenever you crusie at a constant speed or gentle accelerate. If there is no sensor then the car will compensate and add more fuel on the nissans as a safety factor. which means you get bad fuel economy and horrible smoke from it running rich everytime you step on it.
If you have ever been in a car with a air/fuel ratio guage you know that it has reached closed loop mode once the lights on the gauge move backwards and forwards at a constant pace like the light on front of knight rider. You can view topic.
