Hi All I would really appreciate your knowledge here, after watching an A series dogleg 5 speed requiring a rebuild go for $662.00 on ebay. I thought maybe I should be looking at my other options???? What else are there, also how strong where these A series 5 speeds anyway???, Because at that price surely I could adapt a 5 speed from a Bluebird or a Pintara, or is room an issue?or maybe go for the celica box?
But I can pick up rebuildable 5 speeds from Bluebird/Pintaras for $100-$200.
The reason for strength is my little 120Y with its A15 lumpy cam, ported head, extractors, currently with a downdraft weber, is no rocket but its intentions are for hillclimbs etc, so a little bit of strength can mean a lot better reliability. Anyway my knowledge, is very little when it comes to this. So any advise would be greatley appreciated Thanks for your time.

I would say stick with the 4speed as you wont use 5th gear for hillclimb anyway. The 60a 4speeds can hold up to punishment if there in good condition, and if you break one there like $20 or so bucks for another one. Its a cheaper option. I think you could spend the moeny you save on other areas of your hillclimb 120y to give you other benefits elsewhere. A 5speed wont help you go faster or any great benefit, i tihnk they are heavier too.

Both the 4 speed and 5 speeds should have a 1-1 top gear. The advantage of the 5 speed is closer ratios but if you find a close ratio 4 speed that would do the trick.
I would think just running a lower rear gear for hillclimbs would be more worthwhile say something like a 4:70 or whatever reeeeeally low gear is availible.

only the 60l 5 speed has a 1:1 5th gear. Al the other 5 speeds ie, 60A,63A all seem to be 1:1 in 4th and are underdrive in 5th.

if it's a hillclimb, then use any 4 speed and gear it down to where it only goes 60mph in 4th. A 3.7 diff in my car is good to about 20mph (under 6000 rpm so you could go lots faster) in first 40 in second 65-70 in third 4th to 85 and I'd be going really fast if I took 5th out all the way, probably 102+ depending on aerodynamics. a 4.7 or 4.9 is probably as good as you'll find. Someone had a car rigged up with a 6.x diff and he just never used first gear.

Also, the 1971-1973 "GX" 5-speed had 1:1 5-fifth gear (also available from Nissan competition). The 60L was in the 78-79 B310, but I've never ever seen one. Every 5-speed I've seen was overdrive.

the 60L is an overdrive unit, as I have that
year box in my 65 fairlady. got it out of a 79 210 wagon (B310). my 76 B210 has the 60A box and it is 1:1 in 5th gear. Quote:

it's the datsun motorsports one, nobody has one, was it a 56? i can't remember, but glad to know more...

the 60l was an overdrive box, its the 56 series that i beleive is the only non overdrive box that had a 1:1 gear ratio, im currently waiting for a flywheel till i can put my 56 in.Quote:
