#1 79 210 engine swap possibilities
theclerk74 Posted on: 2006/5/16 7:55
Hello to everyone. On the advice of B210Sleeper, I have spent a lot of time here searching and I have a few questions. I have been reading that in order to swap the CA18DET into a 1200 you have to modify the transmission tunnel to get the 5 speed to fit. Does anyone know if this is the case with the 210 as well? Has anyone else done a swap like this that I can see pics of? Also, if this is going to require a lot of modifications to the body and whatnot, what are some better alernatives to getting more power under the hood? Any help is appreciated on this....

For the benefit of non US members, this US model 210 is AKA B310 & Sunny. It's also known as a 120Y in some markets, but it is not a B210.

I have done the conversion in the past & the tranny tunnel needs no modifications. The tunnel is bigger than the 1200. Also we don't know why they badged it a 210 with a 310 model , but here we call 'em 210's cause there was a badged 310 model that was a FWD.

why is it a datsun 210 by nissan...

(280zx - 200sx) - (210) = Datsun -130zs

can we just refer to the sunny 310 as the datsun -130zs to eliminate
confusion with other models...

so that answers the question as to whether the sunny 310 thing had a AT and MT chassis with a different tunnel - THEY ARE THE SAME.

anyone, is there a good detail thing on putting in a 200sx rear axle?

I did a trial fit of a VG30E into a B310 once and that gearbox fitted in the tunnel fine with just a bit cut out for the shifter. The VG gearbox is very similar to the CA one.

I think it's best to just refer to the models by chassis code. B210, B310, N10 etc...

how heavy are those vg30's ? they are the forgotten engine.

VG30 is relatively heavy. The "What Engine" tech section article has weights listed.

Yes, Eddy, good idea. In all countries it is a B310.

I can't give you numbers but they are pretty hefty to say the least. They do sit well back in the enginebay in a B310 though and being a short engine I doubt the extra weight would be much of an issue. They aren't much longer than an A series. The firewall on a B310 is shaped perfectly to accomodate the VG and needs no cutting but the mounts are too far forward to be attached to the crossmember so they would need to be fabricated onto the chassis rails. Look at all that space in front of the engine! ...

that looks like a great fit.

engine mounts to the frame tails aren't a big deal if you want solid mounts.

I think if i were going to swap an engine it looks like that would be it. Every bit of weight possible would need to be moved to the back, i'd add weight to the back to get back to 51/49 with an engine like that.

so it's a 3 liter 6 cylinder, how many ft/lb? Is this the engine that every car i saw it in had caught fire? it was either this one or a toyota 3l 6cyl.

Tell me why these Vg30's are bad, Weight is one, what else is not good. What about vg30 5speed trannies?

Hotrod88, you've done this swap before? What other advice can you offer up for this swap as far as odd challenges or hurdles to getting this done? How about handling? Did the handling characteristics change a whole lot?

210Sleeper: When you installed your 280zx struts and stuff, were there a lot of modifications needed under the hood where it bolt up? I thought I saw a picture of it, but I couldn't really tell. Seems like maybe drilling holes for the plate?
