#1 Head gasket replacement (pics!)
d1t Posted on: 2006/8/18 12:08
I got bored this evening, so I decided to pull off the head and inspect the damage done to the head gasket.

Well this is the cause!

It's about 1.5mm of corrosion.

My question is, is this acceptable? Where should I got from here?

Is it a throw away?

cheers

yikes! looks like a throw away to me but you may just be able to have it shaved down, but personally I would say chuck it and head down to the wreckers for a replacement head just to be sure, it's cheaper too

yikes indeed - I didn't even think Aluminium could corrode like that! It looks kinda like rusting steel more than aluminium.

Thats exactly where my head corroded through 150km away from home on the way back from picking up my new 1000 Wags last Sat night! I put a new head on and binned the corroded one. I got like 3 motors with that car so i had many candidates

If it was mine, I could run a line of tig across there and mill it flat, but with the plentiful nature of A series, you are better to find another head at the wreckers.

This head is 30 years old at least. It's obvious that the owners haven't used coolant...things corrode.

It'll be running again in now time..go find a head

we went out to a mates property and ripped the head off an a14 (was gonna cost us $50) but it was corroded worse than D1T's!
So he gave us a a12 head with peanut chambers and a14 style manifold (but round ports??) for $20 with a set of 2" lowering blocks thrown in.
We didnt get any work done on D1T's ute, but we managed to destroy the rear tyres on my 720
