what is the main cause of the orange peel effect, i painted the bonnet for my 260z today and it looks fantastic except for it looks a bit orange peely.
to get rid of this is it a matter of rubbing back the paint with some real fine wet and dry before i put the clear on??
help please

it soundt like your paint may have been a bit thick just rub it back with 1200 to get it smooth again then put on your top coats
if you are using acrylic leave it a few weeks then rub it back with 1200 to 2000 wet and dry grit before you buff it and it will come up sweet

it is acrylic im doing. whaen do i put the clear on and is there anything i need to do before applying it.
and is it better to have too little or too much thinners???

are you using a solid colour or metalic?
if it is a solid you dont need clear
mix it about 1 third paint to 2 third thinners if your pain is to thick you will get cobwebing if it is to thin it will run
it all takes practice

i thought that the colour would fade with the weather if i didnt put a clear over it.
i thought i did ok for my first attempt. ill post some pics one of these days when i get a chance

nah should be right usualy if you put to much clear on it will be more likely to fade than with out any at all.
i am studying paint and panel at tafe they have taught us when using acrylic to only use clear on metalic colours.
If you decide to use clear mix a bit of the coular with i like about 5 or 10%

i didnt use any clear on my 1200 and it came up sweet..

also another tip make sure you dont use any sylicone based polishes on fresh paint as they will hold in any moisture in the paint
before you hit it with the clear buff a small section to see how it comes up you will be supprised

are u using thinners or retarder to thin the paint? i have found in the qld heat that retarder is sh!t loads better to spray with, you can get a clear coat that comes gloss of the gun, for around doors etc, areas hard to reach with the buffer.
