#1 Bleeding up brakes..... Dry lines.
Coops Posted on: 2007/3/5 13:24
New front brakes (SR20) & new rear brakes (R31).
Everything's been apart & cleaned, but now I have to prime the system somehow so I can bleed the brakes.

I left the rear brake bleed nipples unscrewed last night & the brake pedal partially depressed in the hope that gravity would do it's work, but if it doesn't I'm out of ideas.

Perhaps the mechanics out there have a device whereby they "suck" the fluid down through the line via an attachment on the brake bleed nipples?

Anyone had experience with this?

Thanks in adviance,

Coops

keep pumping............It eventually fills. or use one of those funky pnuematic brake bleeding tools [basically creates vacuum and draws the fluid through]. easy one man job.

Having the pedal partially pressed moves the plunger past the hole that the fluid enter in the MC and closes the cct.

Why leave the pedal partly depressed?
Benny's right, this pushes the piston into a position that cuts off all hope that fluid will run down under gravity.

You would need the pedal in the fully up position to allow the resevoir to access the cylinder & for fluid to run down the lines.

Without bleeding the master cylinder first, All the pedal pumping will be wasted energy.
Once its bled you easily continue. But even after that, pumping the pedal with all the nipples open, will just cause frustration. Open one nipple (closest first) press the pedal and hold it in the down position, then close the nipple and release the pedal. You are relying on vacuum effect while there is more air than fluid in the lines.

i thought you opened the nipple furthest away from the master first when bleeding
so its opposite for priming the lines then?

Bleed cylinder at nipples first

Then once thats done remove nipples from rear calipers
Fill rear bottle
Go drink beer and play playstation for an hour
Refit rear bleeders

Then once thats done remove nipples from front calipers
Fill front bottle
Go drink beer and play playstation for an hour
Refit front bleeders

Then bleed as normal..... furthest rear first then work your way closer to master doing drivers front last

Ive always bled the closest first.
I have never noticed a problem.
Whats the difference between bleeding the rear first on a split system like a 1200?

fill the cylinder and gravity bleed and leave all the nipples cracked.
Next go to your local parts place and by a brake bleader that connects to a compressor read and learn how to use it,mine cost a hundred bucks and I have long since got my monies worth of use out of it.
An old mechanic told me that pumping the system is fine in an emergency but it tends to push all the #### thru the master and can screw up the cylinder and wheel cylinders, pumping the system is harsh but vacuuming is a gentle way of doing it.
cheers ade

All the lines are clean...
Using the correct technique.. Master cylinder still won't bleed up.

Thinking the master cylinder is shagged.

I recall someone telling me a Nissan Patrol master cylinder is the same (7/8" x 3/4"??), can anyone confirm this?
