#1 Gasket Goo Question
matty Posted on: 2007/4/5 23:44
The gasket between the exhaust manifold and the turbo has started to leak on my CA. As it's a large job to fix and I don't have time before my next track meet is there any type of gasket goo that I could put around the sides where the flanges meet to stop the leak? Is there a product that will handle the heat?
Cheers Matty

Not around the sides, as this will just blow out, but sometimes muffler putty when used as a gasket sealant works well enough.

Hi Dodgeman
Are you saying put muffler putty in between the flange faces? Because I can't separate the manifold and the turbo easily. If it comes to that I may as well pull everything out and replace the gasket all together. To do this I need to remove the intake piping, intercooler piping, oil catch can, dump pipe, oil and coolant lines to the turbo etc. It's a whole day job unfortunately. The joys of a big engine in a little engine bay........

Is there any solution I can use for next weekend? Anyone?

I am afraid dodgeman is right.
There is no chance of repairing a leak from the outside in while pressure is forcing its way inside out, like trying to hold your hands around a leaky waterpipe under pressure, you get wet
sounds like you have a big days work but think of it as a good chance to do the job right

Yer dodgeman and blofly have got it right. Your better off fixing it properly by pulling all the gear out. Chuck a sickie from work and spend a day on it. As blofly said do the job right and you won't have to worry about it for sometime.

Thanks for the responses guys. Hopefully it will make it through next Saturday and I've then got a month to fix it before the next sprint meet.
Happy Easter

Thanks again for the answers guys. I thought I'd start on it this afternoon and once I got all of the plumbing out of the way I found it was just a couple of loose bolts. Very happy!
