Tailshaft Unis

My tailshaft Unis were getting noisy on the weekend and when I took the tailshaft in to get changed they told me that the unis that were in the tailshaft couldn't be changed because they were pressed in and they had to cut the yoks off and put in some new ones with unis that can be replaced. Cost is $300-400. Has anyone had this problem before?

They can be machined to accept new U joints. You just have to find someone to do it.

They are called "staked" uni joints.
Not meant for re-building but as mentioned they can be machined to accept re-buildable joints. What you need to determine is whether a replacement shaft is cheaper, or machining as described. Given the time that these things last, it may be cheaper to replace the entire shaft with a fresher one.

The problem I have is the ute is running a dogleg 5 spd and a sunny wagon diff, which makes it very difficult to find a second hand tailshaft.

Any competant tailshaft shop will be able to replace the unis for you.

The problem is that they can do it but the replacement unis don't fit in the exissting yokes. They have to replace the yokes also and then re-balance the tailshaft which is why they want $300-400. The gearbox isn't a stanza...

I had mine done when I used to drive a 1200 ute, they spot welded the new ones in as I recall. You can view topic.
