#1 Advice on engine build?
PurpleJim Posted on: 2007/5/9 19:59
Hey all,
can anyone recommend an engine builder in Melbourne for an Lseries? My current engine build is nearly ready for reassembly (has taken ages due to lots of uni and no money) and I'd rather get it built by someone who knows what they're doing. So far I have an L16 block bored 2mm, L18 Crank and rods (thanks Pigdog), L20b pistons, CA18det turbo, nissan forklift exhaust manifold, HKS inlet hat with water/meth plumbed in (set to trigger at 10psi) running into a 32/36. I have a L20b U67 head which should give it a cr of 7.6 so I'm hoping that this combined with the water/meth should let me run it at 20 psi... Think this is feasible? Any blatant problems? Are the Ca18 turbos efficient at 20psi?

Any suggestions on what cam I should use? Also does anyone know where I can get double valve springs for an L series? At the moment the engine is in many different bits, all freshened up and ready to be re-installed. I know the best way to learn is to do it myself.... but tuning a 32/36 for 20psi of boost sounds like a nightmare... as does getting it to not detonate, hehe.

Cheers.

Glad it's you and not me. You are a brave brave man.
I have to say that you've got my attention though!
Good luck!

Whats this going into?

L-series have dual valve springs as standard.

As for the cam, I would call someone like crane and get a kit, this way the cam, springs retainers etc will all match and you wont have any problems with retainer to valve guide clearance.

L-series have problems with lash pads coming out of retainers when using high lift cams, so make sure you will have the correct retainer for thicker pads.

Thanks for the info Whitesedan,I'm still learning all this as I go so it's a pretty steep learning curve.

Plan is to put the engine into my 73 1200 coupe. Have a really nice a12 in there at the moment but got the power bug. I wanted to get some more power whilst still keeping it old school, and having an unhealthy appreciation of the Lseries from my 200b decided to go that route.... that and I can't afford a CA18det swap. Still, something very cool about a turbo Lseries in my opinion... but maybe I'm just strange.
