#1 Replaced door rubbers - doors dont shut
old_school Posted on: 2007/6/25 12:14
I replaced the door seals on my 1200 coupe with the rare spares ones.

They fit into the door around the top and you gue them into place the rest of the way like the originals. With a join at the bottom.

BUT THE DOOR DON'T SHUT. You can shut the door firm and get the first click on the latch. I spoke to the Rare Spares rep and he reckons leave it on the first click for a few weeks and the rubbers will compress into the desired shape and all will be fine.

What do you reckon - anyone else had this problem?

never had this problem

but i know with ute's (well mine anyway) its difficult to close the doors becuase of the air pressure in the cabin.

they close so much easier with the window open even if its minimal.

gotta follow through when pushing the doors closed with the windows all the way up.

Yeah I had the same, they are still tight... 4 years on but what you should do is wait for a hot day when the rubber will go soft and slam the door. When the seal cools down (at night) it should retain that shape.

Cheers. Adam.

going by what gx1200 has said i spose you could use a heat gun to make them warm and soft and then do it. what adhesive have you blokes used to secure the seals as min are coming loose?

I had this with a 1200 rare spares boot rubber, i just trimmed the underside of the rubber in the top corners and boot sits flatter, that was about 3yrs ago and its fine, just fix up the trimmed area with some sikaflex to seal it up.

Im going to hate this when my I assemble my sedan, have to replace every rubber in the car.

Good point. Coz it bloody cold here at the moment.

Maybe I could gently soften them with the hair dryer and leave overnight ???

Tried closing with the windows down but it was the same. Annoyed because gapped and set the doors up perfect and now they dont shut.

The gue I used is from 3M. Cant think of its number at the moment. It comes in a red box and its a clear contact adhesive which tacks off in 30 sec and sticks instantly.

Available from good independant auto stores.

Its $35.00 for 200ml tube but its excellent. Have used it before. And stures well in the fridge
