Clarification of bits needed for Stanza brakes/strut conversion
Ash

Hey Guys,
Just looking for clarification on this, the wiki says to use "120Y castor rods", so I went down to a wrecker who had a '74 120Y coupe & the bolt spacing on the rods appeared to be the same as the drum brake 1200 - not what I needed at all. Do I need Castor rods out of a specific year range of 120Y? I "think" I read somewhere on here (can't find it now of course) that the ball joint & lower control arm bolt spacing (and hence, castor/radius rod spacing) changed somewhere in the '74-'78 lifetime of the 120Y. I'd like to confirm the year of the change, for one thing to help me find the right parts & secondly to update the wiki to make other people's lives easier later on. Any help appreciated Cheers Ash

im using stock 1200 castor rods in mine, just have to make the groove in the side of it bigger, groove is to clear the stock bolts and the stanza ones are bigger so groove needs to be bigger to match
dont think i did anything in regards to the bolt hols

Didn't you need to change the lower control arms Pigdog?
The only way I can see your "stock" castor rods fitting is if you actually had later model 120Y castor rods, LCAs & struts in it when you bought it - cause neither my stock front drum or disc castor rods fit the stanza LCAs Very confused here.

yeah stanza/sunny lower arms
ive been doing alot of checking lately as im supposed to be making some adjustable castor rods up they are definatley the same as stock 1200 rods i'll have to pull them off some time and see if i did anything to them they were actually out of a 120y, with early struts, and i swapped them with another 120y which was an even earlier model have to use the smaller bolts that go with the castor rod though but the length and bolt hole spacing is the same as 5 other 1200 castor rods i have

your not tring to bolt it together in the car are you?
might have had to elongate a hole or something, but nothing that i can notice now its bolted in dont really want to pull them out in a hurry to check though as they are an arse to get back in

1200 castor rods need to be modified to fit the stanza control arm. the bolt spacing is wider on the stanza control arm/ball joint. if you slot the rear-most hole of the 1200 castor rod you'll be ok. the front hole can adequately locate the control arm/strut.
the other option is to use the stanza castor rod, and shorten it - alot! but its easier & cheaper to modify the 1200 castor rod - you can do that with a small round bastard file and a vice. I have my '74 120Y apart, and those cator rods are the same as 1200, and will not fit the stanza control arm/ball joint without modification. I haven't seen the late 120Y stuff that people talk about on here to comment on that.
