ive had an idea, my mate wants to enter his standard single cam engined corolla in the bathurst supersprint in december and his twin cam motor wont be ready, so we have been looking for cheap power.
the thing is we have a dremel, no tallent and are probably over eager to do all of this lol
so i had a thought, we have 2 single cam engines that will never be used again and i have a practice head we could use (its warped 50thou), do you guys recon a bit of porting would help on the standard motor?
i was thinking doing both the exhaust and inlet and then possibly the exhaust manifold. we have done the usual for more power, service (we already had all the parts so no biggy), weight reduction, removal of heater core and also emissions gear aswell. any other ideas?
as its a corolla ive got no idea what else we could do. its an ae71 with a standard 4ac engine in it if that helps.

Go it mate. A steady hand and lots of patience, so keep the beers well away until you're done- well almost done. If it's all even there shouldn't be much drama. I know it's done quite often, just do it neat and uniform and you'll have a winner!

A simple cleanup of any casting marks and a good port match should be more than enough. . .

Use the gasket as a template.

Unless you are changing the cam and induction don't go too crazy.

Check out the corolla forums, may pick up a cheap cam. . .

Not pointless. What i think you ment is you would get better gains out of the porting job if you put a cam in itat the same time.

Porting a head is not pointless if done properly....

Although you can make it worse if not done right... and bigger is not always better...

Remove the the sharp edges on the short turn (the smallest radius on the bottom of the port about 10-15mm before the inlet valves)... If you are going to increase port size dont remove material from the bottom of the port (mounting face inwards)... raise the top of the port by 2-3mm's going in only about 30-50mm and blend in with the existing port...

May not sound like a lot but it will be an improvement, not a disaster... Your trying to create a venturi just before the valve, to increase air speed, not a big hole with no air speed...

You might struggle with a Dremel, it will be quicker if you upgrade to a Die Grinder with a good spur bit tho.

thanks everybody, now ive got to convince my mate to stop having second thoughts coz he recons it well do damage to the motor. my argument is that it wont and that if for some random reason that it does (right foot lol) he has a spare engine that we could put in it if his twin cam isnt ready before next year sometime.
