#1 56A box, how can i tell if it's a four or five sp?
lowendtheory Posted on: 2007/11/20 4:08
i have read the wiki and all the classification numbers, but i cant seem to find any numbers on the box. i would normally try and cycle through the gears but it has no shifter and i recently broke my hand so it's in plaster and unuseable :(

Heres a 5 speed:

Notice the shape of the extension housing at the top from the sandwich plate backwards towards the gearstick.

This is the main visual indicator that 5th's in there somewhere

The box at the bottom of this pic is a 56A 4 speed. Notice it's a lot thinner inthe same area:

Yer i realise that i presumed he was talking about a 63a when he said 5 speed, never mind cover all bases.

Why do you suspect it is a 56-series box? Those have a large "56" on the side, like in this photo:

Check the position of the reversing light switch, it's a dead give away, & the 56A appears to be cast on different parts of the front housing, though that could just be a production change for 4 speeds.

I've got each of these. Front housing is the same for both.
5-speed
-Sandwich plate differs - oil drain plug screws up into this from the bottom.
-Tail Housing - bulkier to encase 1st gear (as well as reverse). As mentioned above the reverse switch position differs from 4 speed.

This is my 56A five speed. Note that the main gearbox case is a pressure die casting while the extention housing is a gravity [sand] casting which is fatter than the four speed one as both reverse & first gear are located in there.
Note also the position of the reverse switch & this is a solid guide to the 5 speed variant.

Both the 4 & 5 speed versions share the same main transmission case & it will have the base model of 56A clearly visible in large characters on the right side. The external ribbing on the case is a dead giveaway to the 56 series as well.

Another picture. Fat arse five speed.
