#1 Carby problems
old-fart Posted on: 2008/1/17 11:38
Hi, My first post, I have a stock '79 ute and have probs with the carby. I put a kit in it and the accelerator pump does seem ok.To make it at all driveable I have to pull the choke out to 3/4. The external linkages were not correctly linked up when I bought the car and are still possibly not correct.I went to Cobar to get a rust free 1200. The people I bought it from said the brakes weren't up to much like all old cars.Drove back to Sydney full throttle or nothing. Pulled the front drums off and quess wot? Twin trailing shoes the local mechanic had done the brakes up, he'd also reinstalled them arse about. He did work on the carby also?

Hi, also my first post. You could have the not uncommon fault of the hitachi carb that it's leaking air into the engine from somewhere. In many cases the float chamber top plate screws have been overtightened, which warps the top plate. This makes it impossible to get an airtight seal on the joint.

Remedies include filing or carefully hammering the mating surfaces flat or getting a good replacement carb.

The linkages are installed correctly if opening the throttle also operates the accelerator pump and if pulling the choke opens the throttle valve slightly (manual choke). Check the carburettor adjustment instructions from the club wiki.

Good luck!

My last A14 had a warped top and it was the same thing. It ran flat out fairly well but wouldn't idle without lots of choke. I tried filing it, etc ...

I finally put an A12 carb on it and it is happily running today with it.

Thanks,That makes sense,I'll flatten the top tomorrow and see if that helps. I've been playing with the brakes on one of my Pommy s%%tboxes for most of today. The ute was 2 owner the origonal was a lady in Dubbo had an electrical appliance business. Then the couple in Cobar I bought it from thru ebay. Had a canopy on it and if the dude who's after one gets back to me I'd be interested in trading it for............ some wheels ? weber downdraft ? A14 or 15 ?extractors ? WHY ?
