Maybe it's as simple as your battery is rooted. Have you tried a different battery??..

try another battery, if it works then take the battery back with your receipt and throw it at them.... If it fries your other battery and you have it hooked up properly then you have more issues...

Or dont. Im sure you would cop more than a battery in return.
What happens with the motor when you try to crank it over? Does it turn? Do you hear the starter motor operate? Is it only the battery that gets hot? or are the cables to the starter fried?

Not if you throw the battery at the right part of the body and RUN... ok, it was a figure of speech, not to be taken literally... its just what I feel like doing sometimes...

the motor doesnt really do anything now, it just does like half a turn and then stops. i tihnk its the cable at the terminal thats smoking. the battery is fine.

So clean and tighten the battery terminals and give it another go.
If smoking still, find where the heat is located.
If nothing happens, recharge your battery and retry.

I'd be fairly concerned if there is smoke coming from the terminals, it takes a lot of current to get things that hot. I'd be checking for short circuits in the starter motor.
