#1 Car vibrates at high speed.Advice needed.(Update)
1200GXman Posted on: 2008/4/12 9:50
Hi all.
Just went to get my tyre balance re-checked again. Two tyres were out with 15grams each. Reason why, I saw that the steering wheel has VERY light movement like when the rims are out of balance at speeds of 70 to 80km/h. The car also starts to vibrate at 130 to 140km/h.
I used a different shop this time than the previous time to make sure.
No steering wheel movement at the low speeds anymore, but still the vibration at 140km/h. The whole car shakes. The dashboard also shakes.
My questions:
What are the symtons for a out of balance prop shaft? What I don't understand is that my father did get the propshaft balanced a few years back because the car's gearlever had a light vibration on the highway and you could hear a humming sound coming from the back of the car. This is not happening at 140km/h.The whole car shakes.I suspect it might be the rims or tyres and are strongly thinking about selling them and getting a different make and set that looks like the minilites do.
Any thoughts?

my guess would be a buckeld rim g/f's celica has a buckeled rim above 80 kmh it shakes ant rettles and my old mazda had a buckeled rim and anything above 120 would shake it to peices

Sounds to me like a worn universal joint.

I doubt buckled rim because I checked this morning on the balance machine. It is also brand new mags that I bought and have never kissed a pavement or anything like that. Balance was done successfully.

Can universal joints make such vibrations?
I remember it never did that with the old GX front suspention. Now that I remember, Since I installed the new 1400 bakkie suspention this has happened.EVERYthing was tightened to specs. Can it be bearings or shocks or brake discs? Shocks I tested again this morning. They are fine. No knocks and smooth movements.

I phoned kulula about this to hear what he has to say. He said he had exactly the same problem and found the rear shocks were shot. Replaced them and it does'nt do it anymore. What do you guys think?

What shocks are quite good for the rear? I read some post on this site that KYB are quite good for rear usage. Kulula used Gabriel gas riders.

could be something really simple like a tyre defect, sometimes tyres get odd spots and make insane vibration which increases with speed, balancing the wheel won't fix it, since the tyre itself is not round...

the fact that this all happened since you changed suspension is significant too. you've had the alignment checked?

shocks are shocks if you aren't spending a lot of money, the gabriel ones are ok... you have to spend close to $100 each to get anything actually better... try to find some of the orange koni adjustable ones... they're not only adjustable, but much better quality... good luck finding a set, but you'll only need 1 set ever.

Are there any roads in ZA where you can get your 1200 up to 140 kph? How do you miss the potholes?

Yes, that's OK with big tires, but small tires need finer balance. Quote:
balance (place weight on inside of rim): 10gr or less (0.35 oz)
Factory Balance Specfication

Hi h

In this case I would suggest, fault finding...

Start with the following on your...
-Jack the car, shake the wheels in a manner to check if it aint the bearings, sometimes u mite just need to tighten them up...BE CAREFUL , not to over Tighten....
-Prop Shaft could be checked as well, by just going under and see/feel for play from the universal joints, also check by ear....
-G/box Mountings--if shot, it can cause vibrations to your prop shaft in return. And yes,, U joints and prop shaft can cause major vibes, also a clunk noise when u shift gears or take off fast...
-did u check tie rods
-ball Joints
-Steering column

Do u have a 5 or 4 speed g/box?????

Does your tyres still touch on the archs at times...could be a warn tyre???

Generally, vibration caused by warn out/warped disks are mainly noticeable when brakin,,,,

Just my 2 cent worth
