DOES ANYONE NO HOW TO REMOVE THE UNIVERSAL FROM THE DRIVE SHAFT OF A DATUN 1200 UTE 1976. ASUNIVERSAL IS NOT FITTED WITH RETAINING CLIPS?

if my memory serves me correctly, they are non replacable universals.

most people typically take them to a tail shaft joint for them to modify the tail shaft to take larger stronger replacable unis

that is correct . if they dont have the clips u can not change them . some models had replaceable uni's and some didnt. although u can get them fixed by a shop . they can bore them out and fit replacable uni's but its obviously more dollars .

Contact Driveline Services in Brisbane, Newcastle, and I think Sydney and Melbourne now. They will refit your shaft with replacable uni's cost a couple of C notes though. Any drive shaft place will be able to do the job though. I just happened to work for Driveline for a while and I had them do quite a few jobs for me and my friends. Don't mention my name now though, I p1$$3d a few of the bosses off when I left to go and work for Cummins.

It can be done by a good machine shop about 135 usd

The universals are peined in, which is where they fold over the metal of the housings to retain the uni. This was so you had to buy a complete new tailshaft. The best replacement uni's are the standard 1200 ones, but you need to get the front & back fittings machined out to take the new uni's. You also need to get the rememnants of the old unis out, usually at the same time. Personally i would cut the uni's so you'd end up with a front yoke, tailshaft & a rear yoke, then take those along to the tailshaft place,as this would probably be the first thing they would do. Unfortunately this immobilises the car, as you no longer have a tailshaft. Early Datsuns use the same uni's as HQ-HZ Holdens, so the replaceable uni's are readily available. After this first bit, the replacement of uni's is like any other car.

I went through this last year and wby replacing the unis with holden unis and a balance it was about $320 AUS. If I was to get new ones pressed in it was going to cost more. The problem is I probably won't change them for another 20 yrs.

mmm and to think ive sold both my ute tailshafts with replacable unis for around $50

might even be cheaper to get a bluebird tailshaft and a 1200 or 120y BW tailshaft and then get the front of the BW tailshaft put onto the bluebird tailshaft....then you have replacable unis

only cost me $80 to get my tailshaft shortened and balanced....and old datsun tailshafts cant be too expensive

my tail shaft guy will make a complete custom tail shaft from nothing for $220

it should be that expensive, new unis are around 40-50 each anyway so you cant get out of it too much cheaper than 120-150

i wouldn't re-use unis, they arnt that expensive, and why cut and shut an old tube just start with a fresh bit if you are looking at different length etc
