#1 L-series into a 1000
steveo Posted on: 2008/11/9 3:00
Just wondering if anyone has done a L-Series engine conversion into a dato 1000?

I know there is pics of a 1000 with an L16 from back in the 70's ( i think it's Bert or Vixen? can't remeber exactly who off the top of my head)

Basically i want to know how the humble little 1000 handles with the heavier L-series? is there any difference? and also what sort of brakes do people recomend?

just an opinion, i think there's better and more compact options than the mighty L series, I think weight and height are the biggest obstacles for that conversion.,.

so it would upset the handling too much?

Has anyone done the conversion?

I recon it would be way too high!

I mean you cant run a air cleaner on a 32/36 without it hitting the bonnet! I think CAs are just short enough but not sure. Unless you go coilover?

i had wondered if it was to high in the engine bay, I know what you mean Beattie the turbo system i got in the 1000 at the moment sticks out of the bonnet as it is. If i was going to put an L-series i would definatly go for a set of twin webbers.

I have seen a CA18 in a 1000 on ebay and the bonnet does close but i have no knowledge how much of a tight fit it is?

Space the crossmember down with 10-15mm plate.

This is a pic from lagwagons album of how a ca fits in a 1000.

Mmmmmm very intereting!

It's either use some plates or customize the sump.

I might do a mock up soon to see if it's possible, i 'll let everyone know.

I don't know about the CA's.

I would be very worried about handling issues due to the extra weight.

L series are hell tall dude.

Yeah i agree you definatly have to make it handle better to account for the heavier engine, but nothing is impossible, just looking for something different, andsomething cheap that goes like the clappers!

The CA18 (or CA16 for that matter) would be a absolute ball tearer! but i'm looking for something simple.
