#1 Why would 3rd gear go after 35 years - it's only been raced for 20???
Rallytwit Posted on: 2008/11/18 2:40
Ok so Saturday I'm at a Porsche CLub SCCA track day instructing and running the coupe as well. 3rd session of the day lap 5 coming off a hairpin shift up to 3rd and WAHCKA WHAKCA WHACKA the whole car shakes and won't go. Push in the clutch go back to 2nd goes fine, shift to 3rd and WHACKA WHACKA.............head for the pits using 2nd and 4th. Now this is the original gearbox so after 20 years of racing, 5 years of pounding down dirt roads playing wannabe rally driver imagine my shock when the gearbox broke, further adding to my opinion of Datsun 1200's is the fact that after the 3 mile ride back to the pits 4th gear starts making noise.....................honestly you'd think these cars were more reliable then that!!!!
Now I'm going to have to walk 20ft from the car pull a tranny out of the cabinet and spend an hour and a half putting it in the car, all for maybe another 20 years of trouble free running.................and you lot have the nerve to brag about how sturdy these cars are!!!!

hehe!
There's a good chance you don't have a complete set of teeth on third gear anymore!
My bro managed to achieve this (hope your reading this Mick) in about 15 mins from a newly rebuild and never raced gearbox.
Well...I guess none of us would be here if we didn't crave garage time or possess blind love for our aging cars.

qik1000 - you are most certainly wrong, third gear has a complete set of teeth...............they're all lying on the bottom of the tranny.
I also blame that new fangled synthetic gear oil, it was in there 6 months and then blamo the tranny goes!!!!
I've never broken a tranny in anything, I heel and toe downshifts even in my street cars and even make sure to cleanly upshift but it has nothing to do with saving the box. It's Mr. Ego saying "oooooooh look at me, matching the RPM's , silky smooth shifts that even Fangio would marvel oh were all so impressed down here in the land of cogs!!"
errrr that and I could never afford to break anything not to mention that roadracing small bore 2 strokes rough shifting resulted in the old sky ground sky ground.
What's next someone going to suggest that bang shift ye old 56A will blow the thing out in short order......please where do these urban myths come from (side of the motorway?)

Tom
