#1 Fuel header tank for dual DCOE40's
Rezlo Posted on: 2009/6/1 14:35
Any guys that do circuit work here have to use fuel header or surge tanks for their DCOE's?

I am running a holley fuel pump and regulator on a non return line system for my DCOE40's that feed my heavily built A15, It has run this way for a long time but since my new cam and added RPM I have noticed when i really throw the car in HARD into a longer corner the car all of a suddern looses power and takes 2-3 seconds for the power to come back in, feels exactly like its run out of fuel... this said the bowls could not run out of fuel in 1 second at partial throttle even at high RPM.

I have run an in car fuel press gauge, 100% spot on 20kpa, the float level has been everything from 6mm to 12mm no difference, shes running big 35mm chokes due to the 8500rpm red line and she runs 145main and 180airs, fuel ratio is spot on and she never skips a beat, just HARD into a corner and with the fuel pressure dead stable she just falls on her face. My carb builder says its because I dont use a carb header tank, just the usual one feeding into the other but honestly with the pressure gauge feeding between the first and 2nd carb I can not see it being a fuel supply problem if the fuel press does not move at all.

I have run the car flat out from stand still to 6800rpm in 5th a few times with zero hesitiation, its definatly not a fuel delivery volume problem

What you guys think? any of you had a problem like this?

Does your car cut out during hard cornering when going left, right or both?

The anti-surge tank will only help if you fuel tank is low and uncovers the input at hard cornering.

I have your basically the same fuel setup in my rally car, except i still have the standard mechanical fuel pump and i have no issues at all, except i have a slight mod to my carbs. I have a vent in the top plate that goes to a small filter and also have foam filled the top area above the floats to stop fuel spilling into the top of the jets.
On the offroad buggy, we use to add a small tube to the top of the jets and basically make a small raiser to the the little cover so that fuel couldnt spill into the jets.
Found that once fuel spilt down the tops, it would start spluttering, so this could be your problem.

Do you run an anti swish tank? All the fuel may be going to the side of the tank on the hard corners. I run a return line in my car also

I was thinking it could be wash over the jets that causes my spluttering, will give it a try!

Its hard to tell as the biggest corner we have is a right hander and thats where I actualy loose all power, thing is im only on the throttle coming out of it so there is no way even if i uncovered the fuel pick up that it could run out that fast, I do notice a slight fluctuation on power in the one long left hander though, short sharp corners dont seem to effect it at all.

Remember the one thing in this setup is that the fuel pressure stays bang on 20kpa

Thanks

Is it possible that the carbs could be flooding, with the combined conditions of high engine speed, big corner and part throttle to WOT. Does the engine bog down or carbs pop when this condition ocurrs? Also I would be inclined to install a fuel return line. 20KPA - 2.9 PSI is spot on with the fuel pressure aswell

Is your fuel tank baffled?

No the tank isnt baffeled, if i had even the first sight of fluctuating fuel press I would baffel or run a header tank, I never race under 1/2 tank of fuel and I have never seen the fuel pressure move more than 1.5kpa away from 20kpa ( put the gauge in the car T'd from between the two carbs )

I would lean towards flooding as I dont get any popping out the carbs, just a loss of power.

Anyone have any pictures of the above mentioned modifications to the jet's/air inlet vents?

I run my car in Marque so its not massive G-forse either, we have to run street tires granted I am a bit of a lunatic.

If it is surge try to run a EFI filter near the carbs for some extra fuel see if that helps, you should be able to test that pretty easily?

heres the weber mod, (L18_B110's old coupe)
