#1 SR18De vs SR20De
Clive Posted on: 2009/8/22 16:06
Hey guys, up until 2 days ago i didnt even know u get a SR18, now i have one in my posesion and would love to know all the diffrences, as i know the bore's are diffrent, as the Sr18 is 82.5mm, apparently the cranks and rods dont differ. So if anyone has ever had the privlage of having had both these engines and stripped to know the diffrences please tell me. My main worry is, is the blocks the same, and the head. Thanx

Yes they are the same. And both are very different from the SR20DET.

The SR18de is a FWD motor. AFAIK, there is no rearwheel drive g/box that will bolt up to a FWD SR engine. Not saying you couldn't make another gearbox fit, BUT far more work that it's worth. Thats why FWD SR20DET's are worth so much less that the RWD ones.

okay, cool. So the cylinder heads are the same ? Valves, and cams ? And will you be able to bore it out to 86mm ? hehe

FWD heads have the dizzy sticking out the back, unlike the RWD ones that have it coming out of the side of the head up near the front

also all FWD SRs run dizzys from what ive seen so dont know if you could just swap to a CAS like with the RWD ones

my main problem is the head's port work, valves and springs. Are they the same as the Sr20's ? if not what differs. Thanx :)

Why do want to know this info?
Are you planning on putting it into the bakkie?
Seems like you are going to have allot of trouble if I read the other responses.

FWD and RWD heads motors are different, but to answer your question the sr18 head/cams etc is the same as the FWD sr20. If you want to bore it out to 2L go for it. Good Luck with the gearbox though, as has been said a rwd sr box won't bolt up. I also believe the mounting for the engine mounts on the block itself is different to the RWD ones. Not sure if this will be an issue but keep it in mind. it would be much easier to just start with a RWD motor. Probably cheaper in the long run
